Area Open for DRY Use A 12,000 acre area of public land near Barstow, Calif., has been identified as suitable for use by motorcyclists and other off-road vehicle users. The announcedment was made by Delmar D. Vail, Manager of the Bureau of Land Management's Riverside Distric"t & Land Office. Vail said that the area had been under study for several months, after being identified as one of several potential off-road use areas. The area lies near the southern limits of Barstow, within a triangle formed by the Barstow freeway on the west, Barstow Road to the east and the Stoddard Wells Road on the south. Maps showing the exact location of the area are available at the Riverside Office, 1414 University Ave_, Riverside, at 25 cents each. Vail said that suitability of the area was determined after close examination of the land, consideration of the resources concerned and close cooperation with interested persons and groups. He noted that his staff had been aided greatly in selection of the off-road use area by an 18 member ad hoc committee formed for this purpose. Represented on th'e group, called the High Desert Recreation Use Committee, are rockhounds, motorcyclists, dune-buggyists, 4-WD enthusiasts and commercial interests as weU as conservationists, scientists, wildlife biologists, law enforcement agencies and county government. This group is continuing its volunteer duties by examining other areas of public land on the High Desert and making recommendations to the Bureau of Land Management as to their protection, development and use. Vail said that his people had completed signing the area, to sbow the boundaries of pamissable off-road use. He urged those wanting to use the area for off-road enjoyment to observe the publish~ rules and stay off of private lands. * Z w oJ U IN STOCK - NOW! >- Importer-Dist.-So. The new BM's are flashier than last year, with 26 detail improvements. For the first time, the U.S. distributor is goi!lg after sales in the young, sporty market. Butler & Smith have already enjoyed some succ<;sses through participating in Eastern road races, with recent first places in the Open class at Bridgehampton, Long Island and Danville, Va. "Great motorcycles are created not only on the drawing board and the lathe," sayd Buter & Smith Executive Peter Adams, "but also on the race tracks, by dedica ted men." BMW is one of the few brands. offering a European delivery plan, whereby a customer can order a new BMW through his dealer and pick up the machine at the Munich factory - with considerable savings. As a result of their program to - upgrade dealer representation, Butler & Smith recently warned their eastern U.S. dealers that participation in factory service schools and stocking adequate tools and parts were essential. Ninety percent of the Eastern dealers followed through and the rest had to give up the BMW franchise. Soon the Western dealers will be offered the same choice. It's all for the best interests of the consumer. Long famed for building the quietest production motorcycles, th.e new 750cc BMWs whisper only 76 decibels from their upswept pipes. Their sales last year tripled and are expected to go well over 10,000 units in 1972. Oddly, although California leads in nearly every other motorcycle 'statistic, the state is not 'yet number one in BMW sales. Western Sales Manager Matt Capri intends to correct that oversight next year. u Oi,I., NidI Nithohon Mol.", 1"(. . . . .
