wh~ther or not h~ was in a hurry was to watch his line a t th~ water hol~. He eitner went through it, or, more often, around it. Gustav Ramer join~d f~Uow countryman G~boers today, but unlike some fast Belgians, he wasn't on a factory Suzuki. H~ and Hans~n wer~ the r~a1 show for the sp~tators, sp~nding th~ early laps dicing on th~ many infi~ld jumps, hoops, and dropoffs. Ralti~r won th~ first two motos d~cisiv~ly, how~er, and sandbagged th~ last, trading plac~s with Hansen but r~taining second ~ w Z W ..J U > U Bill Clements (77) scrapped for his top American standing. Here he is in Valek. Vlastimil Valek's CZ is a one-off jobber with By David Swift BOISE, 10., S~pt. 26, 1971 - Gawd, that downhill. Peaceful ValI~y's bombastic number was 450 feet of sand, tilt~d to about 90 per c~t. Th~ riders loved it; in fact th~y lov~d th~ whole course. Many Europ~ans t~nd to b~ quite poin ted on th~ subj~ct of American cours~s but for th~ most part, th~y jamm~d on this on~. Torl~if Hansen wasn't too fond of it. "W~ don't hav~ downhills like that. If w~ have on~ that long, it's not mad~ of sand. And ·th~ water, it wasn't n~essary. It was put th~re for th~ sp~ctators but you can hav~ a good International motos, zap-zap-zap. No on~ was ~ven clos~. Sylvain look~d Iik~ h~ was working for th~ fll'St f~w laps; th~ only way you could b~ sur~ of motocross without things Iik~ that." The wat~r hole was on th~ middle of a fast straight and th~ fast~st rid~rs could almost, but not quit~, cl~ar it. "It was no probl~m except on th~ first lap," said Bryan K~nney, who was riding his ~cond Am~rican rac~ sinc~ his American Motocross Team Europ~an campaign ended two w~~ks ago. "All those people hitting th~ wat~r at once...youcouldn'tsee. Aft~r th~ frrstlap it was no problem, though." SyiVain G~boers won all thre~ 500 all~magnesjum cases and sunburst finning among other things. Valek said he was not all that jazzed about it. overalL Th~ day befor~, Mark Blackw~lI talked about his racing whil~ walking th~ track. H~ was disappoint~d in his rid~ at Carlsbad last w~~k but took it philosophically: "You hav~ to have bad rides occasionally. I feel good this week~nd." The n~xt day: Mark got a decent start - Bill CI~ments' was great, running fourth on th~ fll'St lap and proc~~ded to m~ticulously pick off his opponents. He passed Clem~n15 ev~ntually and th~n f~lI down with a plop on a slow hairpin. He picked himself up and sped off right next to Billy. Mark went much fast~r and by th~ tim~ the rac~ was ov~r he had ~ven passed Vlastintil V a1~k, winner of the recent Int~r-AMA moto seri~s. H~ was sixth, following the afore-m~ntioned Europeans plus the English CZ~rs John Banks and Dave Bickers. (These two would spend the day passing each other and th.~ like, having quite an ~njoyable afternoon.) Blackw~Ll was tired but had an attitud~ that should have carried him to victory, of sorts. But in the next moto, the lower end on Mark '5 Husky turned to oatmeal. The battl~ for top American was between Bill Clem~n 15 and John DeSoto, and Clements had beat John both times. Brad Lackey, another DNF'd the first race with a cruddy carbo The last round started with these DeWayne Jones collected the first 250cc win but slowed back to a third overall. Gary Chaplin kept getting off and coming back to get off again. He perservered for a seventh. (49) The h-ill separated many riders. DeWayne Jones eould bomb down it while Tim Hart probably lost the first race on it. The only riders that crashed on it were those that dog-paddled their way. An interesting point. Brad Lackey did quite well for a chap who was only able to ride two out of three.
