Racing? ~ ..... "'-.;::."'-=" By Mike Capalite COSTA MESA, CAL., Sept. 24,1971 Mike Bast was the man to beat in the Handicap Main at the Orange County Fairgrounds tonight as he pulled a clean sweep. With a dispute over riders having too much of a disadvantage from the 70-yard line as they have to make a definite comer before getting it on down the straightaway at the start, it was decided to move everyone up to the next line from what they had been running. There. was some doubt for awhile whether or not Mike was going to dq it as he was following Mike Konle through the pack. Konle was going like there was no tomorrow. Bruce Haserot, who had grabbed the lead from the start, was doing the ftnest job of riding he has done in a long time and it wasn't until the last lap that Konle and Bast had moved up within striking distance. As they went into the last comer, it could have been anybody's race, but Haserot drifted out enough to block Konle and Bast came through the hole like a slingshot to grab the win from Bruce. \ After doing a wheelie in the first corner of his Handicap heat, Rick Woods was only able to get up to a fourth so he was out of the Handicap program, but he made it up in his scratch events as he looked as good as ever winning his heat and semi after a two-week absence. The crowd was pretty evenly diVided as the Scratch Main pulled to the line as it was Bill Cody, Mike Konle, Rick Woods and Sonny Nutter and all of them were loaded for bear. As the gate went up, they came off the line as one and into the first comer tangling anns, legs and handlebars as Konle, Woods and Nutter went down in one big heap with only Cody being able to avoid the pile-up. As the riders picked themselves up, Woods' front wheel loooked like someone had done the Yogi Bear Stomp on it and for once Rick had no spare machine. Ed Williams came to the rescue, however, so the race was able to get under way. Woods appeared to be having handling problems with th e strange bike as he was all over the comers, finally crashing in the last lap. Many said if Ricks' bike had been up to snuff, he never would have caught Cody, anyway. Bill had charged into the lead and stormed around the track like he owned it and for the full four laps. The Second Division Main saw a good show by Danny Becker who is improving rapidly and should be in the first division any week_now. One thing Danny will have to learn though is tht the while lines are for the front wheel, not the center of the engine. Danny was pretty disappoin ted after riding a beautiful race and taking the checkered flag to find that he had been disqualified for jumping the starting lines. He possibly left himself open for a fine as he was given the spindled black flag three times and chose to ignore it. Despite the fact that there seems to be gremlins on the track that take deligh t in knocking down th e division' three riders, the firs third division race had more than its share of spills as Gary DeWhitt took the win with Robert Muzzy second. All the spills in the first third division race must have made the gremlins happy for the second one only provided one spill and the Tider remounted to finish. The win went to Barrie !dom who had made the program as an alternate with Ron Stewart, the mini-bike mogul of Huntington Beach taking a second. Mike Bast further increased his wins of the evening by taking the Feature Match Race over Larry Shaw after a first lap duel that could have made it anybody's race, but Mike had decided to make it his and took the win.
