WON THE SPILLWAY VINO ~ CROSS WHO By Margaret Earnest Photos by Bill Czerwinsky SANTA MARIA, CAL., Sept. 19, 1971 - Track conditions were better than usual this day at Spillway Park for 140 riders for the Lompoc Sio-Pokes motocross. Things started off with a bang with 11 Powder Puff riders going off the line. Cherry Stockton nailed Carol Davis last lap for the overall win. Phil Bateman on his trusty Suzuki was all consistency in the 100 Juniors; he was consistently first. Stiff competition from a couple four-strokes but they just didn't have it and Bateman walked home with the coveted gold. One of the fun races of the day was a challenge race with the newly-formed Santa Barbara Starters. The stakes: a catch the only Powder Puff the starters had entered. It was all in fun and as of this writing would you believe the results have not be computed... too complicated, maybe. Or ,perhaps the judges are drinking ·the trophy while doing their arithmetic. 125 and 250 Seniors were combined and an immediate battle opened up between Greg Higgins on an ex tremely bottle of .the fruit of the vine! Starters challenged the sponsoring club to a four-lap moto. Can't help but believe there was a few side bets going also. This race was the last event of the day and the track had taken its toll of machines and riders so it was a motley group on both sides who came to the line. One of the Sio-Pokes, a non-racer, complained it took him three laps to Dunaway Wins Hi Pt. Trophy Rooney's Show Vast Improvement By Cliff Mills PETALUMA, CAL., Sept. 18, 1971 Sonoma County , Sport Cycle Association held the last race of its six-race series for the high point trophy tonight at the fairgrounds here. The battle for the six-foot trophy settled between Dennis Drew on a Bultaco and Mark Dunaway on a Yamaha. Dennis rode firest in the 125 J unioI race and could 'only manage a second place behind Jim Coates (Yam). He was 500 poin ts behind Mark in the series and his second place only gave him 250 points with no chance to catch up. Mark raced in the 500 Open Junior race and did not even have to compete to win but he did and put on a good race, staying ahead of the other riders with apparent ease. SCSA presented him with the trophy and Mark received a well-deserved round of applause. Corky Swadley. who usually handles the races for the club got hurt last weekend at a race and is now in 'Hillcrest Hospital in Petaluma with a broken leg. I'm sure he would appreciate any cards and letters any of his friends could send. '(Results on page 3Q~ ~, :. I L" .--------_._-. With each of these guys having a first place the third moto was anxiously anticipated. Higgins got the lead on Grossini in the start when there was a crash at the lip and four bike pile-up with Grossini" on the bottom! When machines and riders were untangled no one was injured and the moto was re-started. Higgins again got the lead with Johnny a close second when bike problems slowed Johnny and Robert Haroth grabbed the second piau slot. In amongst this foray the 250 Seniors Sherman Schneller and buddy Mike Anderson were dicing back and forth for the lead in their class. These two brother~ have come a long way from the first night that we all saw them on the first ride on a speedway machine. Tonight they ran away from all competition by winning many of the races that they entered. Mike Rooney won the Scratch Main in front of old-timers Dave Gifford and Gus Lauer. At the end of the race the crowd gave him a standing ovation and he in turn exploded with a great big wave and smile. The match race of the night was between Gary Fishburn and Carl Cranke. These two riders were closely matched blitGary had just a little more experience and beat Cranke to the checkered flag. Ten of the riders that competed were warming up for the State Championship races that they were going to compete in at Bakersfield the following night. • .aJa Wins . , again. ., Hare Scrambles Cactus Cats M.C.
