interesting situation and won both the

Hocking's decided advantages came
after news that John Gennai had fallen
and suffered a cracked wrist the
previous evening in Reno, Nev. The
curren t District point leader may be out
for as long as two weeks and this
amount of time. will certainly put
National Scrambles champ Jim Foley
back in front. But meanwhile, Hocking,
who holds the third spot, is also picking
up valuable points.
The young Fremont motorcycle ace
led off the 250 Expert Main with Foley
taking over second midway through and
holding it. His second spot, worth five
points, put him within three points of
Gennai's lead. Hocking picked up six
points and moved closer to Foley's
second spot but he still has a long way
to go.
In the 500 Expert Main, to prove no
fluke, Hocking passed Ed Baldwin on
the second lap after John Silva slipped
wide on the first turn and stretched out
a lead that no one could best. On the
last lap Foley finally rounded Baldwin
for good after a tough dice and finished
third.

DIANE COX WINS
BUT NO TROPJlY BOY
By Janis Raodall
JUNCfION CITY, ORE., Sept. 11,
1971 - Six trophy girls failed to draw
out the troops to the Benton Lane Park
season finale in Short Track races, bu t
those riders who did show and won
were very appreciative - except for
Diane Cox, the 100 Trophy Dash
winner. I
She was out to win the 100 A Main as
well but Bill Erheos (Kaw) and Delbert
Spinney (Bul) edged by to take first and
second for men's lib. The B Main was
captured by Richard Schoonover (Kaw),
the oldest member of the three-brother
racing team. Brother John was on hand
spectating while recuperating from a
broken collarbone and he allowed
brother Steve to ride his 40-inch
Yamaha and 250 Yamaha dos how off
his skill.
.
Steve took up the offer and fared
well in the 250 A Championship with a
third but not after fiercely battling for
the lead.
Diane Cox again shook up the boys in
the 200 A Championship as she led all
20 laps and dominated the track.
AJ though pressured by Spinney. and
Lynn Stagner (Yam), she never gave in.
Other Champiooshp event winners
included Keith Nerseth (Open-A, Mai),
Mike Hubbs (250-B, Bul), Craig Randall
(250,(;, Oss) and Leslie Huey (Mini,
Suz).

The 650 Expen class at Fremont Friday night went to Rick Otto. winner of the Salinas Benefit
event and who is generally considered to be the King of the 650'5. With John Gennai out with an
injury, Otto's biggest competitor was to have been Bill Landsborough, but Bill got his leg run
over in the heat by Dennis Spence and wound up with a bad break which will sideline him for the
fest of the season. Jim Brooks became Otto's early foe in the Main, but he was soon replaced by
second place finisher Spence.
