" N Nortb i ...' :;; Ill- ri o ~ >t.l Foley Pairs, Budde Bested . By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Sept. 17, 1971 National Scrambles champ Jim Foley, capitalized on the absence of rival John Gennai in the 250 Expert Main to pick up seven valuable points and the overall point lead in the regular Friday night scrambles at Fremont Raceway. Gennai returned to the race scene after only one week's absence but failed to transfer from the heat as his wrist injury is still rather painful and he has problems holding on while landing after the jump. Gennai's lead of 12 points just two weeks earlier has been reversed to a 12 point deficit as Foley has put on a charge reininiscent of the one Gennai put on Foley when he was sidelined with a dislocated shoulder. The points battle will continue through the entire month of November and this will pit Gennai and Foley in some motocross scenes that should prove interesting. Mike Renslow came from an absolute dead last to a third spot on his 250 Expert heat on an experimental Schwerma Yamaha that handled well but didn't have the necessary points down the straight. Renslow is one of the fastest scrambles men around but will switch to class "C" competition for '72. Gary Tonda won the second and Foley the third. Foley's trick for the 500 Expert Main was a fat three second victory, that's like a country mile in scrambles, over Mike VanLienden and Duane Spence. In the 650 Expert Main, Dan Hughes got the jump with Rick Otto and Bill Budde following close. In quick succession both Otto and Budde got by Hughes and opened up a huge gap on the rest of the pack and Otto finally won. Agajanian's National Mile at Sacramento cancelled, a hurriedly scheduled race at the Lodi Cycle Bowl brought out almost 200 riders. and a slim crowd to benefit the young men of the local Civil Air Patrol. The action centered around the large Expert turnout where the fight for points continues. AI Ludwigsen picked up his first win in some four mon ths, a well deserved one, in the 650 Expert Main, while in the 250 Expert Main, Alex Jorgensen was the easy winner after some problems in the heat. Jim Foley had led out his heat race and was having no difficulties until the second lap when a pile-up in the widefirst tum brought out the red flag. Craig Filmer finished up another bad luck week and maybe the season by breaking a colIar bone that has been broken before. He walked to his van with shoulder in hand shaking his head and Ron D8\lies, Harry Dring and ¥ike p:Brien go hard into a corner. ... wondering what God he had forgotten. The restart was one of those in line, with spacing deals that the AMA had dreamed up. Foley won it going away but that didn't do him a bit of good in the Main as the rubber band demised his chances for poin ts. Duane Spence did his thing in the 500 Expert Main on board a new 400 Suzuki. Duane is one of the elderly gents that, like Ray Huff, you can't keep down or behind you. While Huff had problems in today's events, Duane kept the old man's image alive with a win over Rich Anderson and Mike VanLienden. VanLienden has to have set some son of record for seconds and thirds for this year. Paul Reid led off the 200 Novice Main and proceded to open up an unimaginable lead of nearly a lap in three laps and then on the fourth., he felI and couldn't get restarted in time and let the win go to Billy Bowman and Joe Klien. (Results on page 32) By Bill Spencer HAYWARD, CAL., Sept. 18, 1971 Bill Budde made his return to the Hayward Speedway tonight after a 30 day suspension and devastated all comers in the 650 Expert Main. In his first week back at the District 'National' level, he has won one race, taken four se.conds and only one DNF. after not having slept all night to reach Fremont for its first Sunday day scrambles. An indication of what was to happen in the Main was shown when Jerry Chadim won the first heat over Ron Talbot and Dan Hughes. Chadim had been having electrical problems in the past few weeks but all seemed ironed out at this running. For the second heat, Sonny Victor led out the pack on his Cycle News stickie·dad Triumph for his very first Expert ride and held Budde in check for two laps. Budde then put the hard charge .on and passed on the outside of the spectator comer. Budde went on the win easily as Steve Hernandez pulled in to second over Victor. Currently rampaging the 250 Expert class is National Scrambles champ, Jim Foley, and tonight was no exception. He led off the f"rrst heat and opened up a nice comfortable lead over Dan Cosio and John Hlebo. Hlebo was riding his first race in some months after an operation and did very welI in finishing. ~n was sidelined with Cosio mechanical troubles and Mike Renslow moved into that spot. RenSlow was again riding his Sonny Kenyon Bultaco and looking great with a bad start that he turned into a terrific second place finish. On the last lap of the third heat, John Gennai pulled along side Ted Bailey going across the jump and despite his injured wrist, stayed glued at that spot all the way around the spectator comer to nearly finish in a tie for f"rrst. For Gennai, a great effort. This put him in the Main but that was about alI. After leading three bad starts, Foley again was the first man into the f"rrst comer. He then proceeded to open up a two second lead over Ted Bailey and Pat Hennen. This went on for the necessary· number of laps and finished that way with Renslow in check in fourth spot over Budde" with Gennai hanging on for the last trophy. This being the last night for high points, it appears that Mr. Foley has once again ridden to that reward, but that's next week's story. (Results on page 32) Dring Cleans in Expert S1 By James Brammer SANTA ROSA, CAL., Sept. 11, 1971 On a fast bike superbly ridden, Harry Dring cleaned the Experts in the Amateur short track at the Chris Beck Arena. Dan Davies jumped into the lead at the start chased by Ron Davies, Dring, Mike O'Brien, and Fenn Pervier. Dan Davies drove into the second corner too fast skating down with brother Ron in a path across the small of his back before also crashing leaving Dring in the lead. Shortly later second place man O'Brien fell in another corner, but that was still the beginning of an explosive final with all falIen riders recovering within one lap of the leader. The Davieses were running with Dring though both a lap behind. O'Brien on a Sonny Kenyon Bultaco recovered and regained fourth spot rapidly moving up. Keeping within striking distance on the hot pace set by Dring were AUen Yarrow in second and Dennis Robinson in third at the finish. (Results onpage.32)
