Bill is a recent graduate of Royal High School in Simi Valley and says h~ concentrated too much on motorcycles to get good grades. He pondered quite a while when asked to name his favorite subject in schooL "Wood shop I guess; actually I didn't like any of them too well." Asked about his hobbies, he pointed to his girlfriend and said, "Her." The 18-year-old works with his father as an. air conditioning installer but says he has gotten such good support from his family nothing has interfered with his five year career racing motocross. He is interested in car racing also and is toying with the idea of acquiring a stock car or dirt track ride in a four-wheeler. Back at the motocross track, Junior winners were Angel Posca, Mark Anderson, William Inman and Butch Kohler. Top Intermediates for the night were Steve Gerber, AI Wurtzel and Mike Todd. (Results op page 32) Chuck Sower (35M) is holding off Greg Messick. Through the tight righthander, Mark Anderson IS7M) seU up to pass Jeff Morris. Anderson won the 125 Junior class. By Eric Raits GARDENA, CAL" Sept, 23, 1971 Jeff Wright took a pair of Expert class wins at Ascot Park Thursday night and Bill Payne won the other one. Wright easily beat his 125 class competition but had to outwrestle Danny Hackie in the 250's. Wright and Hackie went into the last moto tied for the lead. They swapped positions in second and third several times and Wright came up the big money winner when Hockie got into trouble on the last lap. Mike Horstmann won the last moto with a surprisingly steady ride for a new Expert. Bill Payne topped the 500 Experts, staying just ahead of Intermediate Mike' Todd. Payne has had some battle royals with John DeSoto this year at Ascot and most likely enjoyed DeSoto's .absence. Payne lives and breathes motorcycle and motocross. He's hoping to ride in this year's last European-American confrontation and then plans to tour the entire circuit in 1972. He tunes his machine and does most of the work •• Coming off a jump and really flying is Mike West (39P), who took third in the 125 Juniors, and Gary Elders. .aJa Wins. again!
