Qntario Lap Money ~ w Z W ..J ~ (,J By Janet West NACODOCHES, TEX., Sept. 12, 1971 - Robi Holbert and Phil Snipes made for a great race day at Nacogdoches Motocross Park today. Holbert easily dominated the Open Expert class after Snipes had bike trouble in the second lap, and was forced to pull out of the race. . In his usual flamboyant style, Holbert thrilled the spectaton all day long. He was really wired to his Husky, and took to the track like glue. After Snipes dropped out of the race, Holbert had virtually no competition and was able to exhibit his abilities as a showman by doing wheelies down the finish straight, crolSing up the Husky over jumps and then just turning it on for some fantastic speed. Mouths were definitely agape as Holbert streaked by for an easy win. The real race in the Open class was between Jake De Boe (CZ) and Bob Hanna (Hus). Both De Boe and Hanna have been out of racing for a while, and both were_geared to win. De Boe was mounted on his old faithful CZ, and Bob Hanna was on the line with a shiny new Husky, never before raced, ready to eat De Boe alive. However, things did not go exactly Hanna's way. In the fIrSt The AMA has announced the purchasen for contingency lap money for the Oct. 17 AMA 250·Mile Road Race National at Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, Calif. With a $53,100 pune, contingency from the 78 laps at $100 per lap added to other contingencies total $42,000 additional cash to bring the entire total to $102,000 - by far the richest race in motorcycle histroy. Below are listed the purchasen of each of the 39 laps in both heats: race, Hanna held De Boe off for the major part of the moto, only letting him, around in the sixth lap. From there, Hanna was unable to get back around De Boe, and had to be content to try again in the second moto. When the second moto finally rolled around, De Boe was off the line like a flash, and Hanna was right behind him, but unable to pass during the race, leaving him in third. Phil Snipes did not by any means give an inch in the 250, Expert class, he started in fIrSt place and held it all through both motos, leaving everybody. The 125cc Expert class had a bit of action of its own going on, too. Sam Menefee (Pen), started with the attitude that he was going to win, and he did. The fint moto was spent working his way up from near last place to second place, but time was running out, and he just didn't have enough to get around Craig Glover. However, the second moto told the story - Menefee got out front and stayed. Glover was determined to regain his first, bu t Menefee rode a tough race and new around the coune. Glover was almost able to bite the Penton's back tire, but never close enough to get around. (Results on page 14) HEAT 1 UP No. Name 1. Sueo Products 2. 3. Bultaco's new Alpina 250 designed specifically for the American Enduro rider and the ultimate in its field. Why? Because it weighs-even with full lighting equipment-just 217 Ibs., gassed up and ready to go. It has the pinpoint handling of a trials bike in the rou-gh stuff but will still top 75 mph on the open trail! It features a powerful but slow-revving engine for the maximum in reliability, developing its maximum horsepower at a mere 5,500 \ rpm and maximum torque at 4500. A 21-inch front wheel and braced moto-cross bars come as standard items while the slim-line gas tank still holds a useful 2.6 gallons. Then there is the 11 inches of lfound clearance and 7 inches of front fork travel that enable you to get over the roughest terrain that any Enduro can throw at you. Bultaco knows what the serious off-road rider wants out of a bike. We designed it all into the Alpina. Bultaco Services, P.O.
