SOUTH BAY HAS SWEEPS By Dave Green CHULA VISTA, CAL., Sept. 12,1971 - Buggy Collie, Myron Carter, Ray Vanderpool, and Carl Byers were the stars of the AMA sporting IT races held at South Bay Speedway. Collie won three motos, gave a demonstration of trick riding, and rode the most popular race of the day. Carter, Vanderpool, and Byers each won three motos to sweep their respective classes. Collie, a Novice in the 500 class, went into his act after taking a large lead in the first moto. He crossed the finish line while standing on the seat of his Yamaha and doing a wheelie. In the second moto, Collie was leading when he fell in the switchback of the first lap. Buggy got up quickly and found himself running fifth. He passed Debbie Reon to move into fourth, and then went after Jeff Zwoster and Neal Hereth who were waging a battle for second. The fans came to their feet as Collie closed rapidly on the two riders, and went wild when he passed both of them before the jump on the second lap. Only J. R. Mitchell remained in front of Buggy. With the crowd cheering him on, Collie caugh t Mitchell and passed him in the switchback of the third and fmal lap. Carter's sweep came in the Open Expert class. All three wins were at the expense of Jim Hannon, who turned in a trio of seconds. . Vanderpool was the winner in the 500 Expert class. There was a tie for second place as a trio of riders each had a second and a third in the motos. Mark Peters and Scott Parker trailed Vanderpool in the first moto; Parker and Jack Sweeney finished second and third in the second; and Sweeney and Peters ran two-three in the third. Byers swept the 125 Expert class. Earl Roloff finished second in all three motos and Bob Hartley turned in a pair of thirds to fmish in the class.
