Pes toni tried to catch him; however, once in front Dick is hard to catch and extra hard to pass. Brad Johnson and his little yellow Yamaha again was up to his usual tricks in the 100 class. Brad, off to a bad start in the Scratch Main had to pass John Armseniak, Dave Rathja, and Tom Southam, all on the outside. He appeared to do it with ease and his little Yamaha, is the fastest and most consisten t machine in this class. Paul Carter, Rancho Cordova made the adjustrnen t to a new bike in fine . order. Paul riding'a Bultaco for the second time here at Cycleland pulled off sort of an upset in the 250cc Handicap Main. Paul, once past Dan Peterson, made like he knew there was brass at the end of the track. as he took the Handicap Main. (Results on page 14) Cow Trail Y., a a EllDUIO SPiOCIfTS Poin' Lead By Bill Spencer HAYWARD, CAL., Sept. 11, 1971 Pat McCaul (Ossa) had the 250· race pretty much his own way with a good start off the line. Mike VanLienden took up the second spot with Rick Hocking in close tow. At the halfway point, Hocking got by Mike on the outside of the spectator comer, much to the delight of the race fans, and by the end of the race was breathing heavily on McCaul's rear wheel. VanLienden held on for third over Mike Renslow and Ted Bailey. While Foley was unable to trophy in the 250 class, he did much better in the 500 Main. He led Hocking around for the duration to put himself in the winner's cricle for the first time in about five races, but, more important then that, he regained the overall District point lead from the injured John Gennai. Bud Smith easily ran away with the 650 Expert run with Tiffen Mullenax holding on to second after a collision with Jerry Chadim. Tiffen held second for the distance but near the end, he went wide in the back comer and when he went to bring his Triumph back to the pole, Chadim hit him. Chadim was then set upon by Dennis Spence and both fell. Spence was fast making his way to the front when he rounded the back comer to find no way around the faltering Los Gatos flash. Dan Hughes took over the third spot and held it for the duration over Mike Sarandria and Ron Talbot. (Results on page 14) CHiCO, CAL., Sept: 11, 1971 - The one-sixth-mile oval here at Cycleland Speedway fell to Steve Dieu of Chico and his rapid Bultaco in the 200 flattrack events here. Steve, who had been ri.ding a smallish Yamaha in the 100 classes most of the season jumped to the larger class last week, and this week really made his presence known. He won the 200 Beginner Main by over one straigh taway, and was lapping the slower riders at the end. [n the 200cc Handicap Main' he pushed off to an early lead, appeared to tire for a time, losing some ground, and then in the last two laps again came on strong to win by some five feet over Roger Denny. The 250 dass was enjoyable watching all evening, and no one rider dominated the races during the evening. Steve Pestoni of Sacramento really hung it on the boys in the Expert Main, and won going away. However, Dick Turner, w Z A& A MOTORS ~ 2771 E1 C.mino Re.1 Redwood Ciry (415) 365·31114 10%
