Inglewood. Ca. (2131 673-5562 CAN'T BEA THEA T • By Pete Szilagyi MOORPARK, CAL., Sept. 12,1971 Motocrossers who came to the Camarillo Valley to beat the heat got a big surprise at Bay Mare today. They were greeted by temperatures in the early 1OD's, a dusty track, and nary a cooling breeze. Not to mention the fact that riders weren't seeing much daylight if they weren't wearing a Mid-Valley jersey and riding CZ. The Van Nuys team wham-bam·thank-you-ma 'amed their way to the pay window in both big-bore Expert classes. The Boay Mare management paid the first three places in each Expert moto. No overall winners were tabulated and the arrangement .encouraged some fierce competition because no ODe was ever mathematically eliminated from a shot at the mother lode. 383cc CZ hotshoes Bob Fisk and Bob Hershey outclassed their Open class compeition by leaving them miles behind. Fisk was barely able to win the first two motos because of the constant pressure being applied by Hershey. Fisk saw Hershey shoot in to an early· lead in the last heat and let his teammate go on for the win. Sherm Andrews rode his Husky to third place in two of the matos, but only after Lorenzo Garley crashed his CZ. Garley was able to stay aboard during the second mota to give and Hershey their only Fisk competition. Another CZ rider, Ron DeSoto, took first place money in two of the 250 Expert motos. Ron crashed on the first lap of the first mota and wasn't able to catch up to a money spot. The twin Rickmans of Jim O'Neal and John Maroney took advantage of DeSoto's error and blasted into the lead. Maroney pulled off the win, but only after the pair had swapped places several- times. O'Neal aced Maroney for third place in the second and third motos. In the second heat Maroney was still within striking distance of the.leaders until his motor soured on the final lap. DeSoto's two wins had to be snatched from the grasp of an inspried Jay Peacock (CZ). Jay led both motos until the final laps when DeSoto was able to sneak past for the win. Every race day has its hard luck champ and Ken Zabrt looked like today's candidate. Ken had problems while motoring his Bultaco into the lead in the first two 125 Expert matos, but was able to scare a nifty wire-to-wire victory in mota three. The young Canoga Park ace ju-jued the flagman at the start of the first motoo and shot into the lead. He wasn't able to enjoy his lead for long, th ough, as he soon disappeared in a cloud of dust. He got up after the pack had passed, but wasn't able to do much passing. Zahrt lucked out and got third place when fellow Bul riders John Volkmann and Greg Higgens were disqualified for course-cutting. Ken appeared to have everything un.der control again in the second heat until his scooter got balky and forced Zabrt to-DNF after building a good lead. After Zabrt's tumble, Ray Byers went on to win the first mota handily but was unable to encore in the second. The same bug that nixed Ken's Bultaco got to Byers' Penton and caused him to have to. start about 300 yards behind the pack. Byers was able to finish a solid second behind Zabrt in the final heat. While the other front runners were having motor problems, John Volkmann cleaned up his act for a well-earned win in the second mota. Greg Robertson (Cl) finished second stading up. Greg forgot to loctite his seat fastening nut and his trusty CZ did the old ejection seat routine. THE RACE San Ga~riel Valley M.C. is having a Hare & Hound November 27.
