Jun Brown took the 250 Am/Ex. class on the Bushmasters' course on his hot Bultaco while Jeff Wright took the same class on the Prospectors' course on aJack Byers-tuned Rickman. Tom Brooks took top 125cc Am/Ex. honors both times aboard a hot Carabela, the Mexican import. Repeating last week's feat, Terry Clark did his thing by winning the Trailbike Expert even ts on his Harley-Davidson Baja, tuned by Dean Goldsmith of Filtron Products. Both courses were about 11 miles around and were consider~d "riders t courses". They were very fast but very choppy, and naturally the riders were hot and tired, which made for some rough racing. Let's hope it's a little cooler next week. "Straddle the front -wheel," word came filtering down the line, ''The starting banner is behind you." And so it was. [ asked one of the Prospectors what they called this unusual starting technique. "ldon't know," headmitted grinning, '"'Different, I guess." First 250 Novice was Mike Kotrba (Hus) followed by Jim Freeman (Ossa) and Brent Johllson (BuI). Clodt Whips Ponderosa Clan By Jack LANCASTER, CAL., Sept. 4-5, 1971 The Greyhounds M.C. hosted another Hare Scrambles this weekend at the Ponderosa Inn near Lancaster. Saturday's action was headed by Tom Clodt, who led wire to wire on his Husky to finish ahead of Tom Muto. Ageless George Darnell, the 57-year-old Husky ace led Muto for two of the three laps until a get off forced him to settle for third place. Monte Lee's Yamaha dominated the 125cc mounts of John Glasgow on a Bultaco and the Sachs of Richard Bleakney. The Hodakas of Dennis Willis and John Owen couldn't match the swift Sachs of John DeRose who led the 100 class from start to finish. Sunday saw a new set of faces on the starting line as most of Saturday's riders had left for the point runs after using the 27-mile run as a warm-up. John Glasgow's quick 125 tuned by Lancaster Bultaco earned him lust overall honors and the McHaI full coverage Apollo helmet award for two days high point rider. The 250 Yamaha of Paul Ziegler was in nex t to head the Open class over the >0(" I Of Ross Suzuki of Jim Piette and Dennis Popp's Uarnaha. Second in the 125 class was Monte Lee who led the second loop before he encountered plug fouling. Thirty-year-old James De Blois on a Sachs coupled his 4th place with a 6th on Saturday to win the 100 class high point McHaI helmet. One rider was particularly vehement over being disqualified for taking a fire road that was off course. Upholdinng the disqualification brough t the Greyhounds praise from the riders who had fough t the sandy whoop-de-doos for an earned trophy. The Greyhounds will again hold a Ponderosa Hare Scrambles Championship Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3. Riders will go five times around the nine-mile course. Engraved IS-inch trophies will be awarded to 40% of the entries per class each day. McHaI will again award their superb Apollo helmets to the two day· high point Novice riders. Finisher pins are still awarded to those riders who are tough enough to endure this challenging course. (Results on page 32) Novice Bob Wilson (DKW), had a good strong lead but spun out in the third lap and was passed by 13-year-old Gale Tyler (Hod) who held on to the lead for the rest of the race. Jeff Davis (Ric) finished a close second and Bob Wilson maJ)aged to get it back together in time to get third place. Dale Newton (Due) ran a red·hot race and finished first in the 500 Novice race on the Bushmasters' course. Next came Chuck Slayton (Suz) and Ken Booth (Hus). Things got a little confused at this point as a 500 Novice tore through the ribbon barrier and chased me and several other spectators for a couple of laps around the Snow Cone truck. Sorry, [didn't get his number. AIter the noon break the 250 Novices moved over to the Bushmasters side of the race and last week's double winner Bob Gilbert (Bul), roared through the home check in his inimitable style completely out of shape· and looking like he is about to falloff! Bob held a 200-yard lead over Mark Lickert (CZ) who was sporting a motocross plate. Next came Steve Bergquist (Bul) and they held it like that right through the finish. The only problem is the Bushmasters can't find Gilbert's entry form. You did sign up for the race, didn't you, Bob? It ~urned out to be a pretty good day for Dale Newton (Due) as he took his second 500 Novice win of the day on the Prospectors' course. Nice goin' Dale! Half the crowd had packed up and I(one h'ome by th-e time the sun-burned Trail Novices pushed off on the Prospectors' course at 2 :30 p.m. Chuck Cartledge (Hod) ran a good race, 11l1ishing fust. Gale Tyler (Hod) came in second followed by Don Kessler (Hod). Looks like it was a pretty good day for Gale, too, getting a lust and a second. Thanks to Prospector Dennis Davidow and family. Sure a nice bunch of people who really have the system wired and say their results are official! AIso thanks to Bushmasters' Donna Brooks for her help and to the nice Stump-Jumper with the Snow Cones for sharing his shade. .. " ' . (Results"on p-age<3-2) ".~"
