AeA Holds 15-lap'TD' By Buzz EL TORO, CAL., Sept. 8,1971 - The ACA doe$n't schedule a Trophy Dash in their Wednesday night program of Short Track and TT racing here at the El Toro Speedway, but you couldn't convince those fans who stayed to watch the 250cc Senjor 15-lap Short Track Main Event that his wasn't a Trophy Dash. Hank Scott, 17-year-old brother of ace AMA J unjor Gary Scott, Ioas to be cast from the same mold as Gary. Hank jumped into the lead at the flag drop on his Montesa and went wire to wire for the win. But! He had to fight off Scott Smith (Yam), and Bob Sanders (Due) for the entire 15 laps. Smith and Sanders tried high, low, inside, outside, and that well-known blanket would have covered the three streaking riders for aU 15 laps, but Hank Scott made no errors and received the checker as a standing, ch eering crowd Dual European Scrambles Red Mountain, Calif. The ACA has a team trophy that stands about 6-ziltion feet high that the Unicorn Club has its heart set on winning. Win it, they will, if hard workjng, hard riding and personable Chuck Claydon has his way. Check this: Chuck finished first in the 500cc Senior short track (Bul), first in the 500cc Senior TT on his Bultaco, first in the 250cc Senior TT (Bul), third in the 125cc Senior TT (Kaw) , fourth in the 125cc Senior short track (Kaw) and sixth in the 250cc Senjor short track (Bul). Righ,t on, Chuck. If you have your strength back, we will see you Sept. 15 for the ACA season point championship event. (Results on page 32) thBBarlByDavidson ~~ outpBrformBrs TlleTllree It's . ~. ~. Romero Troian Show Growing Big By Art Loya Photo by Dennis Greene SOUTH GATE, C,o,L., Sept. 2, 1971 President Nixon's freeze on prices and wages may have froze the admission price at Trojan Speedway for the Thursday night TT and Flat Track motorcycle racing program, but track president Rene Armenta went one better by INCREASING the number of events from 25 to 33 for the same current price of $2. The program was loaded with individual racing duels highlighted by the duel of the season between Danny Corbett and Chris Smith in both 250 Main Events. Corbett and his Bultaco appear to be making a serious bid for a season championship at the fifth-mile clay oval as he garnered wins in his heat race, two trophy dashes, and outdueled Smith in the 250 TT Main .. Smith and his Montesa sponsored by Kagay Cycles from Whittier, Caljf., threw stretegy to the winds and relied on sheer speed to win over a hard pressing Corbett in the 250 TT Main that saw Voge escape serious injury after spilling in the north tum and narrowly missed by the field. For most bike fans, the 100 and 125 TT as well as the 100 and 125 IT Mains were pretty much routine with Bob Sanders winning all four. But the real bike afficianados could pick out the increased efforts of some of the riders while making a race of it for the runner-up positions. Top performances were turned in by Mark Revels (Kaw) wh 0 finished second to Sanders in the 100, 125 TT and the 100 F.T. Mains, and a third spot finish behind Corbett in the 125 F.T. Main. Roy Widener (Kaw), although experiencing throttle-eahle problems that cost him the lead in one heat event, finished the night with two third place finishes behind Revels in the 100 TT and 100 F.T. Mains. . And then there ·was little Charlie Summers. Not taking anything away from the Senior riders, it was a real delighted sight to see Summers, whose real age we will keep a mystery, take the jump on his "elders" during his F.T. heat event and continued to meet all challenges all the way to the checkered flag. Summers also placed third in the Junior class in both the 100 TT and 100 F.T. Mains. The Buddy Race saw the Smith brothers (where have I heard that before?), Chris and Mark, win over Elbert Turner and Bob Brown. The Smiths led the opening lap, but lost out going into the second lap and then had to come from behind to win one of the most exciting Buddy races of the season.
