Minert·Monday in CMC /MX at co 1 .... '" .- I}y Eric Raits IRVINE, CAL., Sept. 6, 1971 - Chuck Minert, one of motorcycling's vintlge heroes, beat the Experts at the Saddleback Park CMC Motocross today. Minert rode his clean BSA to a pair of wins in the opening motos and thus needed only a finish to win overall for the day. Minert could have hung back in the pack and assured a first place for himself but chose to compete instead and nearly had. cause to great his ~ w Z W ..J (,) > (,) August 1 Moto-Cross Snowflake, Arizona 1st Mini STEEN Mini·MX MIKE EKLUND August 14 Elsinore Park, California 1st Mini TT Scrambles STEEN Mini·MX MIKE TIDWELL August 14 Moto-Cross Salt Lake City, Utah 1st Mini SHANE BURROWS August 20 Phoenix, Arizona 1st 100cc Novice August 22 ROBERT BLOSE Brush Prairie, Washington 1st 1DlIcc Beginners 2nd 1DlIcc Beginners August 22 STAN JOHNSON GARY BURNETT Indian Dunes, California JA~CE KLINE 1st Mini August 14 Salt Lake City. Minert tried to pass Warren Burrell as Burrell climbed a bank just past the finish line while running second. The BSA rider saw his chance and dove under Burrell but as he pulled even with him, Burrell slipped off the bank and their bikes tangled, shooting both violently off the coune, nearly putting Burrell in to a telephone pole and Minert into a spectator's Pontiac. Minert remounted but was unable to restart his bike and had to push across the finish line when the race was over. Mark Nohr and Greg Smith had to be content with second and third in the 500 Expert division. Dave Smith suffered painful injuries when he locked handlebars with someone and was forced to seek an escape route down a rocky gully shortly after the start of one moto. Smith reportedly injured both kneecaps and a knee when he collided with a huge boulder. Billy Urban won the 250 Expert class with three wins. Urban wore a grim and determined look all day but got to look back and see some fine racing. Richard Eierstedt was awarded his Penton motorcycle today for topping the recent CMC series and rode in an inspired manner. The Bultaco rider moved through the pack and twice finished second only to Urban in his maiden Expert ride. Slick Night for Ascot's Top CMC Motocrossers Moto-Cross OAVE LANGCOR . . . .-.. . ·~.y GARDENA, CAL., Sept. 2, 1971 Thunday night's Ascot motocross brought back memories of the early wet days as nearly a dozen riders fell, leaped and slid into the pond. The 500 Intermediates ran with the Experts and while John DeSoto, Tim Hart and Bill Payne resolved fmishing positions the rest of the pack found some tough sledding. A rider went in the water early in the third moto, splashing up a puddle on the narrow lake path. More riders went down on each subsequent lap wetting the path even more. The first three, DeSoto, Hart and Payne had little trouble over the slick clay but the rest had fits. Spectators in the stands were standing, trying to peer over the IT mound to catch the action_ DeSoto won the first two motos and took a second behind Tim Hart in the third for his usual overall win_ Hart dominated second place while Payne won third place money. Bob Madden appeared an Intermediate to watch. Madden won his class and was in among the Experts each race with good finishes. The 500-]unio<5 followed the big wet race and came to a lot of muddy grief. Bill Stubbs led momentarily until apparent mechanical problems slowed him on the dragonbacks to let Paul Mahnke and Mike Todd zip out to the leading positions. Mahnke came to the little clay puddle fl1"5t, went wide to search for traction and Todd was able to dive under him. More riders went in the water and as the Juniors ftled around for their last lap, Todd, Mahnke and third placer Gary Schultz wisely crawled across the lake path. A herd of eager racers back in the pack were not as happy with their positions as the leaders and really charged across the lake. The fans were on their feet, ready for the inevitable and the riders not satisfied with their lot got new positions but farther back than they had hoped. Tim Hart overcame bad star~ to win all three of the 250 Expert motos, beating Dave Pessey and Bob Messer. Jeff Wright tried the 250's again with negative results. Wright led the first moto until he and Hart came together and Wrigh t wen t down, ripping a fingernail off in a nasty slide. Wright had the ambulance attendants do a little patch work so he could concentrate on winning the 125 Expert class. He won two motos, fell in the other and worked his way to second behind overall second placer Bruce Baron. John Vandergeest was third. . (Results on page 28)
