Nicholas Tops Ascot Experts; Scott Runs Up Junior Streak Photos by Dan Mahony GARDENA, CAL., Aug. 27, 1971 Jody Nicholas and his Allison-Norton returned to half mile action tonight after missin/( one week to compete in the National Road Races at Pocono. Ascot is the only track J ody has been able to find ,a win on this year and he found his ninth main event score in " close one over H-D mounted DeWayn.: Keeter. Nicholas squeeked into the fast time slot in time trials with Uoyd Houchins, Sammy Tanner and Mel Lacher right behind. Houchins was back on the track for the flfSt time since breaking his wrist in the National TT at Ascot and was looking as fast as ever on his BSA. H~ was fast enough in the heat race to top b oth Lacher an d K eeter f or his fint wins since last July. Nicholas kept Tanner from scoring his 400th win by winning the heat race over the ·'Flea" who' was an early leader before taking second. Lacher upset Nicholas in the dash, winning the event for the third time in. the last four weeks. Tanner again was turned back, finishing in third behind Houchins. Nicholas tried too hard for the win and crashed but was not injured. Tanner was off and looking for that magic win in the fmal and led the first lap before Ticholas took over. Then Keeter, riding the low groove for the first time in over a month, started moving from fifth place on the opening lap. Houch ins was a close second until he fell off on lap seven, leaving Keeter the runner-up, but well off the pace. Then DeWayne put together lap after lap, the way he does from time to time and at least twice each year. By the 12th lap he was right on Nicholas bu t for some reason seemed to quit charging and followed J ody the last two and one half laps to take second place. Tanner dropped all the way to fifth with Lacher, the main event winner the previous week, moving up for third. The race marked the return of Jim Nicholson to half mile action for the first time in about three years. A stint in the service. plus a serious car accident has kept him off the track for many season. Jim grabbed a fourth in the heat and a second in the semi before ending up seven th in the final, his first time back. Gary Scott (Tri) and Scott Brelsford (Yam) again whizzed through the Junior and Novice events. Each rider chalked up two more victories. Brelsford now has an overall lightweight win streak at Ascot of 12 in a row. Scott's two wins in the yellow place class now has his latest win streak at seven strigh t. -----,-----------Radio station KBIG will be one of the network of stations broadcasting the Talladega National on Sunday morning live: the Los Angeles based station Is 740 on the AM dial. 104.3 FM. ----------------Early season TT events did not include Novice riders but they will now be back this Friday.
