The story was a report of a dune buggy accident in which a Malcolm Rae Smith was killed. Some people feared that this might be Malcolm Smith, cross country racing star and proprietor of K&N Motorcycles. Malcolm is very much alive. RILEY JOINS 200 MPH CLUB WENDOVER, UTAH, Aug. 29, 1971 Warner Riley, who built the Harley-Davidson engines ror the record 265 mph run last year, joined the select group of men to surpass the 200 mph barrier this week at Bonneville Salt Flats near here with a run of 200.298. Williams, Woods Split Victories By Photograpltics BAKERSFIELD, CAL., Aug. 18, 1971 - The big story of the night was the fact the National Champion Rick Woods didn't win both Main Events. In fact, for the first time in several weeks, Woods wasn't even in the Handicap final While working his way through the pack in his semi, Woods hit the deck. It was almost a first for the Bakersfield fans to see Woods crash, as he has been running away with the Class A shows every week. Williams just made the final transfer spot out of his heat, but then went on for a win in bo th his semi and th e Handicap Main Even t. The finish went right to the wire, as Steve Bast and Joe Fitzpatrick shadowed Williams across th e finish lin e. Gus Lauer made his first Bakersfield' appearance in a "warm-up" ride for the up-coming California State Championship, to be held in Bakersfield on Sept. 11 tho Lauer ran right with the track regulars, and ran off with the Feature Match race win over Greg Haserot. The most consistent rider of the event was the defending State Titlist Steve Bast, who ran second in both Main Events. GP PURSE INCREASE The purse for the Sept. 19 Grand Prix Motocross at Carlsbad has risen to $15,000 reports promoters Cox, Tripes and Associates. This makes it the largest paying purse in U.S. history. The event will be the first of the series of Trans-AMA motocross events taking place across America.
