By David Swift MOORPARK, CAL., Aug. 21, 22, 1971 - The Dirt Diggers aren't used to promoting small races. Last week's desert point run was successful, and their pride and joy, Hopetown, is always a sell-out. Last year, the Third Annual All-State Championship IT Scrambles held at San Clemente was packed with entries. So what happened to the Fourtb Annual bash at Muntz Cycle Park this weekend? . Well, first of all, the Diggers didn't advertise. Secondly, IT riding is on the w'!"e these days, especially out in the heart of the Bay Mare/Rough Rider/Indian Dunes circuit where motocross reigns supreme. Finally, Chuck Ferguson's big-buck Tri-Am just over the hill at Rough Riders dealt a solid blow to the event. Further, the Diggers were at odds with track operator Jim Muntz because they felt he had short-changed them on track preparation. But by the time today's races were Under way, everything was hunky-dory. Competitors drifted through the gates and exchanged amenities with their buddies. Tech inspections became bench-racing sessions. The races started an hour late but no one cared because they were getting lots of practice. Once, the announcer dead-panned, "We only have 340 entries left, folks!" Everyone laughed. Racers wen t three 10-tap motos which totaled over 30 minutes. The track was rough with a few tricky spots on the course, most notably the lll'St set of turns. A sharp right-hander that looked banked turned out to be off-camber. As the rider came off this turn he was probably out of shape without knowing it. As he set up for the next one, a slightly off-camber left, he would be. tempted to steer with the Steve Kohler leads Gripster Richard Marquis the 350 Everybody bash. but not for long. Marquis powered his hot Kawasaki to three big wins while Kohler took third. throttle. Lots of people crashed here but no one got hurt. One guy did get hurt elsewhere on the track. Jim Watson got into a freak accident and his bike broke his leg. He came back in a cast and a big grin. "It'll be four months, 1 guess," he chuckled. There was dust but the breeze that always floats through the park carried it off into the distanL It never was much of a problem. When the day ended - by one o'clock, mind you - beer came out there was a lot of comradeship. It was a lovely day, and it may have been one of the nicest races the Dirt Digger have held. Mike Sixberry won me first two 500 Novice moteo. after he was given a bad time by Bill Ring. District 37' Heavyweight Scrambles Champion Jim Connoly was given a bad time - and consequently beaten - by Jeff Sexton in the 500 Amateur/Expert go. Connoly got a poor start in the final moto but worked hard to bid for second. His Yamaha. a bike that he was testing for a magazine and was not quite up to the job. blew a tire as he bombed down the back chute on the last lap. Jim was lost in an explosion of dust as he crashed but wasn't injured. Still, he had to settle for third behind Walt Bird.
