Blackout Cuts Perris Weekly Program Short By Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., Aug. 7, 1971 - A power failure which blacked out the track and surrounding area forced some of the races to be scored on the basis of two heats. The blackout occurred during a race and although it didn't slow down anyone in particular, it has got to be one weird sensation and a bit on the scary side. Jeff Sexton and George GilleSpie had all the preliminaries for some third race in the Expert moto. It's been a long time since anyone has made Jeff chase them and that's what George was doing. He even went as far as a little motocross riding down the straightaway but that trick cost him flfst. Vince Graves rounded out the field. Jack McCafferty put it all together to take the win in the Amateur moto. Bud Barry looked like he was going to continue his win streak in spite of his . transfer to Amateur but unloaded going into 'the sweeper. Jack took over and that was all she wrote. Walt Foster nailed down second place honors and Cary Tanner, after mechanical problems in the first go, got things going to take the third spot. George Luther who has been a bridesmaid a lot made it to the winner's circle in the Novice Moto 11 over Rick Hutchins and Rick Bair. It was a small point spread ·that separated these riders. Ray Shafter did his thing in the Novice Moto I topping Kent Wilson and Stan Bateman. It was Stan's first time in the result's column and it was hard-earned. Doug Mason is being out numbered , by Stanfords in the 250cc Amateur-Expert class. Instead of Terry, Doug had Toby on his heels. The 250cc class is becoming crowded with shoes but Doug still shows them the way home. The big battle of 250cc Novices came in Division 11 between Ossa-mounted Gary Whitehead and Tom Avion, who have been rivals before. It was Gary's night which puts him two-for-two and on his way toward the Amateur rating. Rick Draudt got up for third. Brian Hobart and Steve Jones were top dogs in the second and first divisions. Frank Schnetz rode his Bultaco against Yamaha-mounted Tim Holm and Ken Evans and captured enough points for the win in the 175-200cc class. Rex Hailey put on the best show in the 125cc classes getting some fantastic drives through the sweeper and down the back side. Rick Doyle was second and John Wetzel third. Jamey started things off in the 175-200cc class. He is still pretty much the ruler supreme and even with a handicap backward start he got across the finish line first. Ron Bell on an Ossa was second. In the first division of 250cc Novices, Garry Copeland held off Ossa mounted Ronnie Marx for the win. Then, Tim Holm climbed aboard an Ossa and must have liked it since he put it to Allen Pearson and Roy Addington bad in tne 250cc Novice II. Tom Avion next gave Ossa its third win of the evening in the 250cc division four and for Tom it was long overdue. Besides naving one hand bandaged he held off Gary Whitenead, a threat in anyone's book. Dave Boystun took tne 2!>Occ Novice three and his wins were clear. Behind him Wallace· Halverson, Jim Johnson and John Wood were so evenly matched that they ended up with a three ",ay tie for second. Doug Mason looked on his way to another victory in the 250cc AlE class but bike problems sidelined him after the flfst heat. Chris Smith took over and another challenger has appeared on the horizon in what has got to be the most talent packed class on any track, anywhere. Rox Sex ton is following in big brothers footsteps and has climbed aboard a 400cc Maico. He's only been out about five times and came up with his first win in the Novice moto topping Tom Darrah and Ray Shaffer. Ron McDaniels who is one of the most improved riders of the season put it all together and out rode Perris regulars Bud Barry and Bob Greenstreet in the Amateur-Expert moto one. Ron left no room for mistakes as he came off the line with a hard drive, and got out in front and stayed there. Jeff Sexton did his usual thing in the second Amateur-Expert go. Walt Foster seems to have tne power but doesn't nave the quickness in the turns. Walt may prove to be the upset victor of the year. Dan White, an infrequent visitor to Perris, looked very much at home with the big boys and edged out Vince Graves for the third place slot. Tad Willis is still proving tnat his transfer was the righ t thing to do as he again won the 125cc Amateur-Expert class. Rock Milner rode like he never has before in the 100cc Amateur-Expert class and managed to outride Rob Morrison who is in strong contention for No. 1 Distric t 37 ultraligh tweigh t this year and Richard Sweeney who is the current No.1. Rick is sponsored by C&H who also started Richard on nis way. Jim Clubb and Randy Monroe captured the 100cc Novice classes. Randy Monroe is getting closer and closer to the Perris Amateur rating. Perris will be closed the weekend of Sept. 5 so that the riders can compete in the championship races at Vegas. MX GP Trippe, Cox Associates announced that they have been granted the sanction to run the first United States Grand Prix for Motocross and that California has the honor of being the flfst state to host this important event, Sept. 19 at Carlsbad. It is the first time that American has been given a World Championship Grand Prix sanction for two-wheel sports. The sanction for the World Championship Grand Prix has been granted. by tne Federation Internationale Motocycliste who are the governing body of the sport in Europe. This race will be the first in the annual Trans-AMA International Motocross Series and with its Grand Prix sanction joins 12 European countries in the World Championship Series. This year, however, under F.I.M. regulations, the race doesn't count for world cnampionship points, as these regulations require a race to be run by the same promoter at the same track for two years"before an event can count for points in the world championship; roll on 1973! The Grand Prix is to be held at Carlsbad Raceway near San Diego, one of the few tracks to meet the rigorous Euopean Grand Prix standards. With a $12,000 purse for the Grand Prix, the iron men from Europe will be invading California and will be renewing their season-long battles like never before. Riders are expected from Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Spain, England, Czechoslovakia and Russia on factory machines from Suzuki, CZ, Jawa, BSA, Maico and Husqvarna and amongst the 25 European riders will be such World Champions asJoe Robert (5 times), Bengt Aberg (present World Champion), Torsten Hallman (4 times), the new 500cc World Champion, Roger DeCoster or Ake Jonsson, Adolf Weil, Heiki Mikkola, Dave Bickers, Vic Eastwood and Jonn Banks. These giants of the sport are hard men to beat and the question is now will tne top Americans fare against them? . Tnis will be a truly International affair and it is intended to be run that way with all th e color, charm, and multi-lingual atmosphere supported by the pageantry of national flags, national an thems and brass bands. « " M i: w AMERICAN Ossa's Night at Perris : * By Elaine Jones '" rJ) .
