Penton to Eierstedt Sage Winners of year. I doubt if the temperature even passed 95 degrees during the race, and there was a slight breeze to keep the dust down. The only points one could criticize are the srnokebomb (which died just before the novice start) and some scanty trail marking. Turns and danger were extremely well-marked, but on the trail itself .there was little lime and the ribbon was sometimes spaced out so that it was difficult to follow. I didn't hear about anyone getting lost or being unable to find the course, however, so it must have been all right. The B.L.M. had a hand in the race this week. They prohibited some sections the club had chosen and then helped the club find some new ones. According to one club member, the BLM.s sections were easier than those they replaced, but according to another member they were harder, so take your choice! At any rate, the BLM is trying to help as well as regulate which is not only good thing, but awfully rare among bureaucracies. Note the unusually ful! results in the paper this week. Bonnie McKimmey of the Huntington Beach Club had them all ready for us less than an hour after the race proving that it can be done. It's appreciated both by the paper and the racers, wbo can at least find out who won witbout waiting weeks. Our nomination for AMA official of the week: Mike Hinsbaw who finished 7th heavyweight Amateur. Marine BuI Mike Cummins Yam By Eric Raits CARLSBAD, CAL., Aug. 22, 1971 Richard Eierstedt ended the CMC's Penton Series with a cliff-hanger win at Carlsbad today. The Bultaco rider from Norwalk led in Series points most of the way but needed a win Sunday to walk away from heavy pressure put on by Chuck Bower, Mike Cram, Gary Faxon and other riders. Eierstedt had a comfortable lead in the first moto wben be dumped his bike and dropped way back in the pack. He grimly worked his way back to a fifth place finish while Gary Cochell was winnong on another Bultaco. Eierstedt won the next race and Coehell became a potential villian by finishing fourth. The last moto ensued as a must·win situation for Eierstedt. Cochel! grabbed the lead and held on as long as he was able but the series winner was able to get around and draw out to a safe margin. Ch uck Bower won a division in both the 125 and 250 Junior classes and finished second in the Series. He and Mike Cram were tied in point total but Bower had more wins in individual mo tos for the tie-breaker. Gary Faxon finished fourth and John Vandergeest was fifth. CMC officials IMIII...... Whitey Martino has removed himself from his doctor's care and is puttering about his Van Nuys shop with a shoe on one foot. There is no cast on his leg he removed it recently to go swimming in Barstow where bis uncle lives. He says he'll be able to ride in about two month. but it will be longer before he can race. Characteristically, he's more interested in "sex" right now, anyway. During his stay in the hospital, Steve McQueen called him to see bow he was doing and Whitey complained that the nurses were giving him indifferent care. "Let me talk to one of lem," said McQueen. "It's for you," said Whitey, handing the phone to a nearby nurse. "Who is it?" asked the puzzled attendant. uS teve McQueen." .., l'he1probleln wali solVed lJ ,~\I ,jJ announced these standings as unofficial until a complete tally could be made. Expert Bill Urban returned from a vacation to resume his quest of the CMC ~ number one number plate and ran into w tough sledding. Urban placed second in Z the 250 Expert class behind Rich W ..J Norgaard when he experienced U >mechanical problems in the last moto. U Urban won the first and Norgaard the last two motos. Urban apparently had the 125 Expert. class sewed up but lost a chain in the fJrst moto and had more trouble in the third. Jim Beauchamp won and Leonard Mellgren was second. Mike Cram had an easy time in the 500 Expert class, winning all three motos ahead of Dave Smith and Bob Fisk. A flood of new Experts and Intermediates should be lost now that the series is over. Transfers to higher cla~ses have been frozen during the senes and the leading riders have amassed several times the needed number of poin ts so CMC motocross should have an entirely new look in the coming weeks. Next CMC race is at Ascot Park Thursday night followed by a Sunday meeting in Ensenada. (Results on page 28) .. ~. . $10· .... on this " ' introduetory offer.
