RENO SPEEDWA Y HAS PARADE Of WINNERS By Steve Young RENO, NEV., Aug. 12, 1971 - A race is a race is a race is a race~..and that's just what happened during Reno's August 12 speedway evening. For once the first places were well dispersed with no sinltie rider cleaning up. A new rider,John Cunningham, from the thriving metropolis of Fallon, did a fine job of riding to win the Handicap Consolation ahead of Mike Rooney. He held the lead from his O-yard line start and kept well ahead of all challengers with his consistency. Stu Morley, Ascot hero of years gone by, copped the Handicap Main from Cecil Oswald in the last comer. He stalled skillfully in a somewhat unorthodox manner until Oswald went just wide enough to let him squirt through. Gus Lauer captured a well-deserved win in the Scratch Consolation Main. His riding was flawless so that second place finisher John Fishburn had no chances to get around, or even think about it. Dave Gifford won the Scratch Main as usual. There was some talk in the pits afterwards that if Gifford doesn't make a mistake and let someone else at least Smith Surpriser By N. A. Williams CLACKAMAS; ORE., Aug. 13,1971 Jimmie Smith (Tri) took a surprising win over Mark Williams (Tri) in the Expert Main at the Oregon Sidewinders Pro TT tonigh t. Ike Reed (Tri) had fast time in the Expert class with 16.29 and Williams had .econd time with 16.44 Williams then won the Trophy Dash with Glen Adams, (N or) close behind. In the Main it was touch and go for some time as first Mark then Jimmie took the lead. The race started to settle down with Jimmie in the lead and Mark second. Ike Reed was in third place at the halfway mark and it stayed that way for the rest of the 15-lapper. Mark tried hard to get around Smith but just couldn't make it. With a $1200 purse and top points on the line, Jimmie was not about to let anyone by. The Junior class was very short of riders, with only six out for time trials, and one of these was not able to race. Jerry Lambert (Tri) had his bike catch on fire as he sat on the line ready for the trials. The fire could not be put out before the bike was badly burned. The crowd took up a collection to help Jerry rebuild his bike. By the end of the evening there was close to $200 in the pot. Randy Scott (Tri) again took the win in all events in the Junior class and had top overall fast time with 16.25. In the Novice class Steve Baker (Yam) did a repeat of his earlier wins and took all the top cash in this class. Steve once again holds the point lead at this track. (Results on page 24) and By Dick Sjoboen GRAHAM, WASH., Aug. 13, 1971 Friday the 13th was a good day for Gary Brown (Nor) and a rather disappointing one for Mike Stee~g (Tri). Brown got a com~-from-behmd victory in the Expert Mam Event over Chuck Thielke (Tri) and Steering, who had led the first five laps. The sixth lap saw Brown and Thielke squeeze out Steering in the north tum, and the ne.xt six laps were pretty much carbon cop,es of each other. Brown had earlier come from behind to ace Thielke in the fu:st heat. Fast Expert qualifier Thielke however, won the Trophy Dash, leading all the way. Competition in the Junior class was sharpened as Don Lipp (Yam) made his first appearance here since the National at Castle Rock where he took second. Randy Skiver (Tri) managed yet another Main Event win, but the event was a real ORDER • • • • • • • • • • • • • • ACCESSORY CO. • • • MOTORCYCLES 3958 E. 14th ST., OAKLAND, CAL. Don was the fastest qualifer of the night at 18.73, besting the Expert riders also. In the Dash Don and Randy were wheel to wheel, sliding through the turns really putting on a show, until Randy hit a slick spot on the back turn in lap two and fell. Track conditions figured heavily in many events. Excessive water was applied previous to the Dashes, which resulted in a 30-rrnnute delay in the program and many subsequent falls. In the absence of Steve Baker, Bultaco riders Claude Hislop and Jerry Whitlow shared the Novice honors. In the Dash, Hislop lost the lead to Whitlow in the slippery north tum on the second lap. But the next time around, Claude managed to go inside and squeeze out a narrow win. The Main Event saw Whitlow lead all the way. (Results on page 28) It sure would be nice if some new riders showed up next week. You know, Reno isn't such a bad place and the track is getting better every week. It's almost like a real race. Last week's slogan was "bring a friend", this week it's "bring a rider...and his friends." (Results on page 28) Let's have an American World Champion. Williams CLACKAMAS, ORE., Aug. 6, 1971 The track was a little too wet tonight and the time trials were held after the Novice heat races. The track was still too wet for good times. Over all fast time was Expert Ike Reed (Tri) with a 16:46 and Randy Scott's (Tri) fast time for the Junior class was 16.66. Ike finished third in the first Expert heat, which was good enough to make the Main, and took second in the Trophy Dash. The first Expert heat was won by Jimmie Smith (Tri) and the second heat was won by Glen Adams (Nor). Adams came out strong in the Trophy Dash and held the lead for all three laps to take the win, then he came out' in the Main but fmished in fourth place in this event. Jim Jones (Tri) got the lead at the start of the Main and was able to hold it for all 15 laps to take the win. Reed held second and Smith held third. They jockied back and forth but held these positions all the way. The Junior events all went to Scott once again this week as he won fIrst in the heat, then the dash, and then the Main. The Novice events again had the biggest turnout of riders and they were all trying for a share of the $1300 purse and a few more pain ts before the end of the season. Collecting most of the pain ts and first place money was Fred Siegel (Yam). He won his heat, the Trophy Dash and the Main. The partisan crowd which champions him would disagree; they enjoy his superb riding too much. One of the most entertaining events was the Division II Carnival, er, Main. Most of the riders seemed to have trouble finding the track and kept running into fences, the ground, each other, and anything else that was handy. Young Ronald McGill did a creditable job of staying on the track and won ftrst place for his efforts. One of the contestants, Wild Bill Daane, thought he was at a sportsman race and decided to take a couple of laps to clear out his machine and was sent to the pits.
