BSA has jacked up their prices considerably for the second time in a year, this time at least a whopping 20 percent. * SERYICE * * SALES* * PORTING * *WELDING * ACCESSORIES * Woods, Bast Split Speedway By Mike Capalite COSTA MESA, CAL., Aug. 13, 1971 After missing out in the Handicap events with engine trouble, Steve Bast came back in the scratch events to pull a clean sweep by taking wins in his heat, the semi and in the Main Event. In the Main, it wasn't all gravy for Steve as Mike Konle grabbed the lead off the line with Steve, Bill Cody and Sonny Nutter side-by-side through the first tum. Coming out, Bast was able to pull inlo second spot with Nutter and Cody fighting it out for the number three slot. As the race progressed, Steve moved closer and closer to Konle and was badgering him on the inside but Mike was holding a tight line through the comer. As they came into the last comer for the checkered flag, Konle left the gate open and Steve blasted through to take the win. Rick had his share of troubles also as he pulled a wheelie in the middle of the comer in his scratch semi and lost it over backwards which put him out of the scratch main, but he had still qualified for the Handicap Main. Since Top two finishers in the team race, Larry Shaw and Rick Woods. there were four men in the Main with GO-yard handicaps the officials moved them up to the comer so they would all four get a straight shot at the start. As the gate went up, it was Gary Fishburn in the lead with Don Cu.llum second as Woods took the jump into third ahead of Sonny Nutter, Bill Cody and Larry Shaw. As Cullum moved ahead of Fishburn to take the lead, Woods dove in under Fishburn and they bumped in the comer with Fishburn going down. Coming into the last corner, Rick was able to grab the lead over Cu.llum for the win, but behind them, Nutter, Cody and Shaw were going at it so close that they all piled up in one big crash with Bill Cody being the only one able to keep his machine running to get up and come across the line for third place. The crowd-pleaser of the evening was the special team match race between Steve and Mike Bast against Rick Woods and Larry Shaw. As they charged off in the first comer, Mike Bast was on the inside with Woods right next to him. Mike drifted wide and took Rick out to the fence so Steve could come inside and take over the lead in a fine bit of team racing, but as they went into the next comer, Rick came back under Mike. As they bumped, Mike went down taking Steve with him so it was a restart. On the restart, Rick was first off the line and as he went into the second comer with Mike right right behind him, he slowed down so Larry could get him on. the inside while he held Mike at bay. As Larry and Rick held the lead, they would go through the comers abreast so there was no hole for the Bast brothers to get through. They came across the line Shaw, Woods, Steve and Mike. This was definitely some of the best racing seen to date at the Orange County Fairgrounds, so if you haven't made it ou t this season, you had better make it a point to before the season is gone.
