Raff T. Lealh John Miller, President of the Badger Racing Association in the midwest, was killed instantly on August 12th at a half mile race meet in Fainnont, Minnesota. Miller had gone onto the track during an 'event to assist a fallen rider. Another rider came' by and struck Miller. He was pronounced dead at the track. A native of Wjsconsin and a former AMA racer in the late 40's, Miller started promoting AMA half mile and short track events in Wisconsin in the early 60's. He moved to Minneapolis, Minn., four years ago and created his own race sanctioning body. He brought professional oval track racing to an area that long had little or no' events of this type. Also on the day's program will be events for both the "Old Timers" and Powder-Puff divisions. And 'these two groups have, in the past, provided some of the most spectacular action. Also available at the track on race day, will be entry cards for the Miss Indian Dunes contest a beauty pagean t to select a reigning queen for the "Old Reservation" - and which will take place on the following Sunday. H,ONDA AFTER RECORD GARDENA, CAL., Aug. 11, 1971 American Honda Motor Co., Inc., U.S. distributors of Honda motorcycles, announced today that it will make an attempt on the World Land Speed Record for motorcycles this year. The record runs will take place on Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats. The curren t record is held by Harley-Davidson, set last year at 265.492 miles per hour. Honda's record attempt motorcycle will be powered by two Honda 750cc' four-cylinder overhead camshaft engines, each capable of producing upwards of 140 bhp. Both are standard 750cc engines as found on Honda's CB-750/4 sport model, but especially prepared for this land speed effort. Development of the special Honda motorcycle is being conducted in Gardena under the direction of Jiro Akiyama, national director of service for American Honda, and Robert Young, national' service manager. Overall director of the project for American Honda is Taiichi Sakama. Construction of the motorcycle itself is 'taking place at Reaction Dynamics, Inc.; a body builder headquartered in Milwaukee. Commenting on the attempt, Sakama said, "Honda has continually led the world's motorcycle makers in speed and perfonnance competition, so it seems only natural that Honda should make a run at the Land Speed Record, as well. We have tested the Honda engines extensively already, and are confident that the 'Honda Hawk,' as we have named our LSR machine, can bring u. the record. n No date has been set by American Honda as yet, but this, as well as the selection of the rider, will be announced in the near future. has been sanctioning and running more than 40 events the past three years in Minnesota, Iowa, the Dakotas, Missouri and parts of Wisconsin and Nebraska., Last season Badger had over 400 licensed riders mainly due to an inovation of Miller's that eliminated the three class novice, junior experts and had only a 250cc lightweight class or the open 650-750 class. A rider could take his choice and ride in either, but not both classes at any race'meet. This became very popular with the riders and fans alike at the many major annual Fair dates run by Badger. John Miller was in his early 40s and ~as buried in Verona, Wisconsin, a small town near Madison. An official of Badger stated that the remaining race dates this year will be run but future plans for Badger are not certain at this time. His untimely death could have a great impact on many states as to the future of professional racing in the upper midwest area. Oddly enough, the Fairmont track was one of his most successful, drawing over 6,000 paid people to the annual Thursday night Fair date races in the town of only 10,000 people located in southern Minnesota, just a few miles from the Iowa border. John Miller was a true pioneer ,in modern day, racing and had the respect of all who knew him, both on an'd off the racetrack.
