AT sueo GP ~ W Z W ...J U >- U Bill Manley 1191 was given Ii fiFSLplace fin.ish at the end of the Open Production race but Jack Simmons (88) was second. You can see the ju~ges had a rough one to figure out in this one. next to last lap and they were really screaming through turns 7-9 trying to set up for that final drive. Out of tum 10 they came, side by side, dragging it to the finish. Everyone was ready for this and as they crossed the line, the distance between the two was so close, it would have made Mark Brelsford's squeeker over Kel Carruthers at Laconia seem like a "sizeable margin" in comparison. Officials conferred for a short while, then gave the nod to Manley. Little Pat Evans, that youngster from Grossmont, Calif., who wins everything he enters and ·enters just about everything, made his return today from an accident he had at Willow Springs several months back. Evans looked strong and healthy as he picked up wins in the 250 Production, 200 GP and 350 GP. Bike troubles in the 250 GP dropped him to last tbere. The AFM bad one of its better turnouts, spectator wise, with some 1500 or 2000 on hand. This caused Jim Manning, the AFM's LA Chapter head, to look forward to next month's Cycle Guide PG with a gleam in his eye - a little bit of greater expectations. . (213) 474-6650 or 879-3350 Night Motocross to Payne By Eric Raits GARDENA, CAL., Aug. 12,1971 - Bill Payne made one of his infrequent visits to the Thursday night CMC Motocross at Ascot Park and walked away with a win in a class which lately has belonged to John DeSoto. DeSoto looked as if he would again dominate the Experts and their big machines by starting the nigh t with a clear win. Dave Pessey (Ossa) ran second for almost a full lap but Bruce Baron and Tim Hart wanted Pessey's second spot. They converged on him at the crash wall drop off, went off the wall three abreast and scrambled the standings. Hart (Mai) and Baron (Ric) were suddenly second and third. Pessey bowed to experience and accepted the sudden loss. The second moto gave a preview of the overall finishing positions. Payne won it on his Maico and Hart finished second. DeSoto had trouble in the lake tum and droppeQ to the back of the pack. He worked and worked until he was in a respectable position only to drop back again. The Long Beach motocross veteran redoubled his efforts and managed a fourth at the finisb. The nigh t's last Expert race saw Payne and Hart again run one-two with DeSoto having engine problems which dropped him to seventh place. Dave Pessey took top money in the 250 Expert class ahead of Bruce Baron and Richard Baxter. Baron tangl.ed with Bryar Holcomb in the first moto putting him dead last on Holcomb's Cbristmas card list and way back in the fmishing order. Baron (Ric) won the last two motos ahead of Pessey (Ossa) but his 11 th in the first race while Pessey was winning gave the overall win to the young Ossa rider. Jeff Wright (Ric) won all three of his races in the 125 Expert class again. Mike Garrett (Pen) led Wright for a while in the first race but couldn't hold the La Crescenta desert-motocross ace. Garrett finished second overall and Tom Cook, (Bul) was third. Intermediate class winners were Patrick Perkins (Yam), Mark Skolil (Mai), and Danny McKee, (Mai). The 500 Juniors waited until the last lap of the nigh t's last race to make their race interesting. Last week's winner Eric Olesen (Hus) led all the way but Jesse Dykes and Mike Higashi broke up a parade in grand sty Ie at the end. Paul Manhke no doubt felt he had been rudely treated after running a comfortable second for two and three-quarters laps. Dykes (Gre) and Higashi (Hus) were figh ting for third place when their accelerated pace brought them up to Mahnke coming across the lake to two more turns and the checkered flag. Mahnke was relegated to fourth spot and Dykes and Higashi took the second and third J;>ositions. (Results on page 28) CUSTOM FRONT WHEEL ASSEMBLY All steel with custom legal brake hub.
