By Dick Sjoboen GRAHAM, WASH., Aug. 6, 1971 Dave Clift on his 250 Bultaco broke into the winner's circle tonight as he won the Expert Trophy Dash, besting Triumph mounted Dick Waller and Chuck Thielke, leading all three laps. This must be the first time that a 250 has won an Expert event here at Graham Speedway. In the Expert Main, Bob Fievez (N or) got by Gordy Ocbs (Tri), who led the first six laps, and stayed there the remaining six laps picking up the large share of the purse. Bob also won his heat race, leading all the way. Although the crowd was fairly large, Junior and Expert riders are still finding other places to ride Friday nights. Enough Novices were on hand to fill four heats, but only two Expert and two Junior heats were run. Junior Randy Skiver continued his winning ways. Randy, in fact, drove his Triumph to wins in his heat, the dash, and the main, leading all the way in each event. He was also fast Junior qualifier. Steve Baker (Yam) won his eighth Novice Main Event here tltis year. Steve's back row start in Novice heat three didn't seem to bother Itim at all; when lap one was complete, there he was in the top spot! Steve's victory in the dash didn't come as easy as usual, thoullh. Sam Martin and his Bultaco had visions of a win till the end of lap two on the front straight when Baker fmally managed to pass on the outside. Variety must be what keeps the riders returning, combined with free admission to the swimming pool at the track and fme overnight facilities. Several Southern California riders camped at the track for several days before the race ana expressed amazement at the existence of such a fme racing facility. The day's most exciting racing was again provided by the large turnout of 250 Experts. The big question was how David Boydstun, CMC Expert who had traveled all the way from Long Beach, would fare against the best Experts from the North. It appeared the trip had been worthwhile as Dave's quick Maico took the lead off the line in the fll'St moto. His lead appeared to be growing slightly when his plug fouled on the second lap. Dave Langcor (Ric), Craig Hubbs (CZ), and Don Stover (Hus) swapped positions for the remaining four laps with Longcor taking the flag for the win. The second moto saw an even start with Stover, Hubbs, Longcor, Boydstun and Da Prato taking the wide fll'St tum at about the same time. The heavy competition for the first few places continued until Boydstun crashed through the snow fence on lap three. Longcor pressed for the win with Hubbs making a spectacular pass on the last tum of the last lap for a second In the third moto Bill DaPrato (Hus) jumped into the lead at the start and held it until fatigue from a recent wrist injury slowed him in the final laps. The 250 Amateur event is always exciting racing with 25 or more hard charging riders competing for the trophies. Local favorite Ross Westphal (Mon) led the fll'St moto from start to finish, but his several spectacular crashes put Bill Scarlett (CZ) and Darren Courtwright (Yam) into the top positions. September 12 will see a return of the action to Cal-Am Raceway. The local riders are hoping for an even better turnout of riders from the southern part of the state to help improve the level of competition.
