Dan started racing here four weeks ago, and really was a rank beginner. He was constantly losing control of his bike in the corners, at times hit the front fence, and simply could not handle his bike. However, he lCf'ldually showed improvement and this Cal-AIR MI Draws Large, 'Cool' Crowd By Bruce Young SACRAMENTO, CAL., Aug. 1, 1971A very large crowd of riders and spectators come to Cal Am Raceway to enjoy a fine day. There is even a swimming pool available for those who would like to take a dip during the races. The race started off with a bang by the l00cc Novice class with Charles Marshall on his trusty Honda winning going away. Cbarles only hassle came in the third moto when out of nowhere came Rick Goldie on his super Rat to hassle with the Honda and almost took the third mo to. The nex t big races of the day were the 125 Am-Ex. event with Kevin Henry really putting the pressure on first place rider, Ed Rossman, the only expert in fron of Amateur Herny (Pen). Kevin finished first Amateur with Rossman taking th e overall win. The big winner in the 250 Novice class was Gary Cochell of Southern Calif. winning all three motos on a Maico. Gary was on vacation here at the raceway and really knows how to ride with a big smile on his face. A really happy rider indeed. In the 250 Am-Ex. event it was one rider all the way in each moto. Expert rider Dave Lougeor (Ric) won each moto very easily with little hassle from any other riders all day. Several of his fellow competitors tried to catch Dave but just could not get it all put together. The first 250 Amateur rider was Bill Scarlett (CZ). The number one rider in the Open Novice class was Ron Womack (Mai) who won all three motos easily. Bob Bowers (Hus) came out on top of the Open Am. with Don Mally second and Robert Harshbarger third. The fmal race of the day was the Open Expert race. Don Stover of Colman Husky Shop of Stockton out classed all other riders all day except in the last moto when he had to show his worth by beating out Larry Bastoni (CZ). Another rider to come to Cal Am from Southern Calif. was Dave Boydstun•. fast in the early laps but has trouble falling later. The next big race that will be held at the race park will be Sept. 12, so be sure to come early and stay late. (Results on page 28) evening he put it all together to take first in the B Main in the 250 class. Dan may be one to watch in the future. Del Silva from Sacramento again showed up here, and again took borne first in the Expert Main, and the 250 Scratch Main. He beat Dick Turner off the line all evening, which is practically .mheard of, as Dick usually rules the roost when it comes to getting ot the first corner first. Dale Mehlhoff of Red Bluff had his orange Honda perking all evening. He took first in the 100 B Main, and then proceeded to zap the boys in the 100 Handicap Main, making two trophies in one night for a new rider. He even moved out of the beginner class and now sports a five-yard handicap. Dave Houghs of Travis A.F.B. had the crowd amazed as he kept his Bultaco at full throttle and managed to pass everyone on the outside, winning the 200 Handicap fmal. Even Jim Hubbard and his Suzuki (reigning National Sportsman 200cc flattrack cbampion) could not get close to this lad in this event. Jim could not work his way through traffic fast enough, and had to be content with "maybe next week." He did manage to win the 200 Scratch final during the course of the evening. (Results on page 28) Smith Collects Sill ewin II ers By N. A. Williams CLACKAMAS, ORE., July 30, 1971 Thirty-four Novices made up the bulk of the 52 riders present for tonight's races. Many of the usual riders were not there but the ones that were put on a good show for the crowd. With $1200 on the line, all the riders tried hard for a share ot if. No time trials were held. The Trophy Dash was won by Jimmie Smith (Tri) with Jim Herschback (Tri) second. At the start of the Expert Main Glen Adams dropped his Norton after hitting the fence along the straigh t. As the bike bounced around on the straight, Jim Gale (Tri) hit the bike and went down hard. Neither rider was able to make the restart. Jimmie Smith took the win in the main with Ike Reed and Ed Herrmann battling it out for second place. Herrmann ended up second with Reed third. The Junior class was sh ort on riders but long on action! AI Brackenbury (Tir) gave Randy Scott (Tri) a bad time in both the heat and the Trophy Dash. Scott got out by himself in the main, however, and took the win with no trouble. Kawasaki-mounted Novice Ron Olson once again won the Trophy Dash in a match against Keith Dunn (Bul) and Duane La Pore (Kaw) third. Dennis Fromm took the win in the main with Fred Seigel (Yam) second.
