S.IA TIIPUIIUDfl r..q Johnson Posts Top Lap at Green Valle y SouthWest By John Blanton GREEN VALLEY, TEX., Aug. 8,1971 - At today's Green Valley Triplex motorcycle races, Mike Johnson, on a 125cc Carabela, posted the fastest motocross lap of any bike of any size, down four seconds from the next fastest time. Mike's stunning perfonnance not only netted him first in his class, but he received $300 contingency money from the Carabela factory representatives on hand to observe the races and to dole out the money. Carabela also posted contingency money in the second and third place imishes, but those places were occupied by the Bultacos of Mike Crowley and Jeff Kring. The most spectacular motocross action of the day was seen in the 250cc class, which featured a very tigh t dice between Husqvama mounted Wyman Priddy and Mark Harrington on a Bultaco. Wyman won out, and Mike Harrington, also on a Bultaco was third behind Mark. Mark went on to take the Open class on a Suzuki over Terry Peterson and Mike Doughty, also on Suzukis. In a 100cc class dominated, forever it seems, by Hondas and Hodakas, Ronnie Shoecraft won it on a Hodaka over Honda rider Lawrence Aadams and Hodaka-mounted Jerry Hubbard. Exciting news in the road race was that Carabela had sent a factory team up from Mexico City with three bikes, two of which, a 125 and a 200, were to be ridden by Jaime Glenn, the factory's top rider. Jaime said that he felt that, despite the difference in displacement, the 125 was the quicker machine, and he had the chance to prove it. Jaime's clutch was zero in the 125cc heat, and he spent the six laps with Ed Green (Suz) and Jim Weise (Yam) as the three of them scratched furiously among themselves while Johnny Bryant's two Yamaha exhaust pipes shrank to pinholes in the distance. Off the 125 after taking second and onto the 200 for the 200cc heat, Jaime promptly stuck the big Carabela under the guard rail at the "U" tum on the fll'St lap. So Ricky Simmons won the heat on a Bultaco over Jon Minonno, also on a Bultaco, and Duncan Paul on a Suzuki. As a result of his experiences in the first two heats and as a result of the clutch on his 125 being fixed in the 1'111 Iw. )~ • SCRAMBLER MOTORCYCLES 60"" off 1801 W. 8urbank Blvd. Burbank, Calif. 849-5907 or 845-8738 Ex. 7 WeI.1I &s·,;:RfP MAleo~lterer . ~ AMERICAN 1321[. _ _ FUtLElITOIl CAlIf.I7t4I.7a.4111 " shop racer" Engine No. 43M502 $650 250cc Cappra 3oporl, 5-speed; stockholder's "cow-trailer". He would have, too, for during the race he was pressmg KJusemeyer hard and still mugging for the photographers while cranked over at 70 miles per hour. People asked David Watkins what he had done to his bike between races. During the 250 heat, while Yamaha teammate Odem finished an easy first, Dave languished among the back-markers, but the Final saw him scrapping with KJusemeyer (Yam), Bill Vickery (Yam), Jet Tharp (Yam) and Jerry Brust (Duc) and eventually beating them to finish second behind Mike. No secret, explained Dave, there was only one trophy in the beat. Drag races were also held today, and top bike eliminator was John Kittleson on a 750 Honda at a time of 12.10 seconds over runner-up Marion Owens on a Harley. Lee Wood was unable to qualify his Harley fueler because it twice dumped him at the line without his getting under way even once. After obtaining special permission to make a timed run after qualifications had closed, Lee once again attempted to ease the beast out of the chute. At the touch of the throttle the engine coughed out about 2000 foot-pounds of energy in one burp, and thrashed about on the pavement still short of the Christmas tree, shearing off its carburetor in the process and nearly mauling its rider. Does anyone else want to see that thing run? Not the case, however. Mike had gone down hard in front of Bennie Campbell and the Norton had cartwheeled into the back of Bob's Harley. Bob Thomas was not to last the race, either. Oil on his rear tire had cost him a high speed spill in Monterrey last spring, and when he detected a recurrence he pitted the bike. This let J .C. Klusemeyer come up to win on the same Norton that Jon Minonno had ridden in the heat (AMA rules tend to liquify under the Texas sun). Second was Bennie Campbell on a Yamaha TR2 and third was Ron Muir on his 500cc Kawasaki. Bennie had finished second to Ron in the 500cc heat, and he blamed the loss to a slipping clutch. He fIXed the clutch for the Final and then found that he was running ou t of revs at the top of the bill at the end of the drag strip. "A little different gearing and I would have had it all," he said ~. [@ OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS meantime, Jaime elected to ride the 125 in the 200cc Feature with thc result that, while he still did not catch Johnny Bryant's 125cc Yamaha twin, he did put creditable distance over the other 125's in the field. Bryant finished a close second in the event, behind the predictable Bultaco of Ricky Simmons. Mike Odem on the race track has about him a sense of great urgency, and aboard the 750cc Norton of Storm's Cycle in the Open heat he piled up a tremendous lead. Even though Salina, Kan., scheduled their race for this date, it didn't seem to affect the good turnout we've been having. Riders from California, Oklahoma and Missouri showed with many new riders, especially from the Wichita area, indicating that cycle racing is following earlier predictions. Due to the summer season, all Jr. and Sr. classes were run together but scored separately, with the Srs. being started a few seconds earlier than the Juniors. This just makes for a better day's event. . The 125 Jr. class was won by Greg Drouhard from Wichita on a DKW with 1200 points. Second place went to David Dixon from Wichita on a Yamaha with 825 points for his first time on the track. Larry Kaufman, Derby, Ks., took third on a CZ, with 625 points. Larry's brother, Pete, also rides a CZ In the 250 class. The 125 Senior riders had their work cut out for them. Tom Treadway of Parsons, Ks., riding a Hodaka, really gave Gary Clements a hard time on his Yamaha, not oversighting Mike LeValley, Wichita, on a DKW. It could have gone anyone of three ways, but Clements came in iust for his 1100 points, Treadway got 850 for second, and LeValley with 825 for third. For the 250 Senion, GAry Witt, Wichita, on a Yamaha took first with 1200 points. Loy Burnett, Wichita, on a Kawasaki, was second with 900 points. Third place went to Marvin Whitham from Wichita on a Husky with 675 p<>ints. Burnett is one of the up and going riders who frequents our track, riding a Kawasaki. Riding under his cbosen No. 6 plate, he bas been giving Witt, the No. of the race, he parked the Norton under the guard rail where Gleen had done before him, and Jon Minonno won on a similar Norton by the same shop over Phil TerrineUa on a 750cc Moto Guzzi, also from Storm's Cycle. Mike was getting a little oil on the Norton's rear tire, and they thought they got the problem fixed by the feature event. However, on the first lap of the Final, Bob Thomas on a Harley twin came around first. Mike had crashed the Norton at the number two turn, a very sharp righ t-hander at the end of a fast straigh t, and the ambulance carried him to the hospital.
