CAN·AM FINAL NEARS With many close contests for divisional cbampionships still undecided, the 6naI round of the Can-Am Motocrou Series is expected to attract most of the top California moto racers to Indian DuDes Park in Valencia this Sunday, AuX. 15. The overall Can-Am winners - one from each division of both Senior and junior riden - will become the California Team to represent the state in the Canadian Centennial races to be held at Aldergrove, British Columbia over the Labor Day weekend. Winning riders Will also receive many f"me awards from different motorcycle industry manufacturers, among which wiU be a free, fuJJ-coverage belmet in official team colors of blue and gold from California Helmets in Van Nuys. Next Week In VOICES OF THE WEST MEMORIAL TO LOYAL PENN The flag at Perris Recreation Center lkw at half mast Wednesday night in honor of Loyal Penn who died of injuries suffered at Corona Raceway during the Championship races Saturday. Gerry Burton gave a short eulogy about Loyal who started his racing career at the track a few short yean ago. Loyal loved the sport of cycle racing and the sigh t of him and his grandad was a familiar one at all the tracks in Southern California. AU the riders and friends wiU miss Loyal and send their heartfelt sympathy to the Penn family. We will all miss this fine rider and young man. ELAINE JONES Riverside, Calif. HELMET OFFERING Thank you for your most generous contribution toward the expenses of my case. My attorneys have decided to request a continuance as they have not had the time to conduct the necessary investigation as to who should be witnesses in the case. I expect the case to come to trial sometime in March of next year. The estimated expenses in the case wiU be in the range of S1500 to $2000, my attorneys are serving without fee. So, if you can, ask various California Motorcycle organizations to contribute. We need to finally settle the issue by having the law voided by a FederaJ court thereby forcing the nuts in the Department of Transportation to abandon the idea. JACK ZEKTZER 6308¥Z 18th N.E. Seattle, Wash. 98115 NOT INVADER OF PRIVACY This is in answer to the letter written by Bob Helm which appeared in your paper dated August 10, 1971. We are Invader members and def"mitely take offense at the insinuation made that the person making an ass of himself during the Rescue 3 race was a member of our dub. Although he was talking to our people, he is, in fact, a member of an entirely different club. I will not mention his name or the other club's as I feel it isn't necessary to tarnish another club's image either. We are proud of our club and its members, and have always been known for our helpfulness and integrity. We this man's actioDS. In our defense the facts are that th is man was not a member of or wearing an Invader jumper, but is a member of another club who was visiting our camp. This man has apologized to the Invaders and has agreed to write an apology to Mr. Helm and his family in Cycle News. WES ANDERSON SR. Invaders M.C. Los Angeles, Calif. Cycle News West Assistant Editor Dave Swift tagged along with Dick Mann while the National Circuit toured the West Coast recently and he has come up with a compact but thorough article about what makes Mann tick and his thoughts about racing in general ... Meanwhile, the National Circuit has moved back East again with Friday night the date for the Annual Sante Fe 25-lap Short Track at Santa Fe, III. With the National Points race currently locked in a tight battle, the results from this National could make or break a few Number One plate hopefulls.•. Then, Cycle News correspondent Ron Schneiders sets down and chats with Gene Cannady, considered by many as one of the most all around riders in the Western United States while competing in desert, motocross, enduros, trials, etc. This often·times unpublicized individual has some surprising things to say about the sport he is in; plan on reading about in it in next week's Cycle News, on sale Wednesday. WHO'S COME ALONG WAY? In answer to a letter by Gary Gelson on silencers, appearing in Cycle News Aug. 3, you replied that we have come a long way. Who has? Not the desert riders! We used to be able to ride anywhere in the desert. Now there is hardly any place where it's allowed. The minute they started asking the B.L.M. for permission to ride on public land, we have had it! Before it's over, they will build a ten story building and staff it with dozens of men, and put up thousands of more signs. Yosemite has been spoiled this way. There are more rangers and signs there than bears. G.DARNELL Sun Valley. Calif. ISDT HELP Last year I expended some $750 and three weeks of my vacation to go to Spain for the ISDT. My primary purpose was to provide whatever support I could for the American riders. During the actual six days of competition, I worked from 5:00 a.m. to 11:50 p.rn. each day doing whatever was necessary to accommodate the riders and the team effort. I like to feel tha t I had some small part in the 19 medals won by the American riders. This year I found that the ISDT would be in the Isle of Man and that it was to be an all AMA show with Mike Vaneil handling rider selection, accommodations, charter fJigh ts, etc. Four months ago I wrote a long letter to Mr. Vancil telling of my experiences with last year's team and volunteering to help again this year in any way possible. I have been to the Island three times previously and know my way around quite well. Well, I found the good old AMA hasn't really changed a bit.
