Cal Expo Exhibits Woods The match race of the night was between Woods and Dave Gifford. At the start Gifford's machine faltered for' a second and almost lost its fire in the second turn. Woods, upon seeing this, waited until Dave could get roUing again while going down the straigh t and they really flew from that point on to the checkered flag. The big race of the night was when Gifford was able to beat out Woods to the flag during the handicap main event, much to the liking of the crowd. Another interesting thing to happen Stu Morley of the Red Beard racing brought the crowd to its feet when John team came back to Cal Expo to also put Fishburn fended off little Les Chanky's on a tme sh ow by winning his Itandicap attempts to pass during the Scratch heat race, Semi final Handicap Scratch Consolation race, to give John a well heat, and tmally finishing off the nigh t deserved win at the flag. by taking third in his Scratch semi tmal The Scratch Main Event was the and the Scratch consolation. premiere race of the night with four of The local riders whom did very well the big guns going together. By Bruce Young SACRAMENTO, CAL., July 30, 1971 Rick Woods, United States Class A Champion, came to Cal Expo to put on the finest show of racing that a crowd could ask for. Rick was called out to make a couple of exhibition rips at the track and show the spectators that undoubtedly he is deserving of his title by really displaying the most fantastic riding style of a Speedway bike in Sacramento as it should be done, by a professional and true sportsman. COSTA MES· SDEEDW.' II r II then t'ishburn to pass them, Steve was right there with his wheel on the inside, and as they passed Fishburn going into the last lap Steve kept to the inside. As Woods opened the hole, Steve pulled ahead to take the number two slot with a beautiful bit of strategy leaving Woods in third. The Scratch Main Event had to be the heartbreaker of the evening as Sonny Nutter had the outside position on the line, but came off the line wi th a fantastic hole shot and dove into the lead in the first comer with Mike Bast in second, and Shaw and Woods side by side so close that they were tangled coming out of the flrst comer with Woods breaking free into the number three slot. Nutter was keeping the lead in fine style as Woods slipped under Bast and set his sights on Nutter. Woods would dive in beside Sonny in each corner and Nutter would hang in there and come out in the lead each time. As they went into the last corner; Sonny went in with enough lead that the fans knew he would have the lead coming out although Rick was right beside him on the inside. Sonny had been coming out of the hole with fantastic acceleration, so his fans were elated. Suddenly, Nutter's luck turned for the worse as he lost his adhesion just as he turned it on and while he didn't go down, he turned about 180 degrees and was facing the opposite direction as the other riders passed. Woods had another Scratch Main Event win. The two Division nl Mains were won by John Flanders (who decided to forego his usual spectacular crash and give a super-good ride for the win) and Larry Hardison. TBIS FRIDAY (l) ~ w Z w ..J ~ U Bill Cody holds off the charge. LEWISGRABSMAIN Ily Sportphoto BAKERSFIELD, CAL., Aug. 4,1971 Kurt Lewis took full advantage of his zero handicap to lead the Handicap Main from start to finish, grabbing his ---,--:'~_-"::"-_ (Co nt'd. from page 10) I" the Division II Main, it was Jim Dancause taking the lead from the start to hold it all tbe way to the win wltile Rich Richards, who had moved into second, almost lost it when he became tangled with Danny Becker. But, they broke away and Becker dropped back to finish in fourth while Mickey Quade copped third. The hot weather seems to bring a few tempers to the boiling poin t, as the first half of the races brought about a few ncar-altercations. But after a rider's meeting during intermission where referee Mike Hinshaw appealed to their sportsmanship, sense of fair play and devotion to professional racing (also of some help might have been his threat of suspensions and fines for any transgressors) the riders settled down to good racing and forgot their antimosities for the evening. Threats from Rick Woods and Mike Konle never materialized and Rick got hung up in traffic and Mike had his rear tire go glat. Rick did manage to salvage a second on Sonny Nutter's back up bike after Rick's machine refused to fire earlier in the evening. Mike Curoso held off numerous bids from Mike Bast and Stu Morley to come home second. Kurt was almost speechless when he came in to the pits after his best outing to date, but the very large grin on his face told the whole story, a very happy young man. 'Wild Bill' Cody made a very strong come back from his broken collarbone, with a wire to wire win in the Scratch Consolation. Bill jumped right out into the lead and had clear track ahead all the way and quite a bit of clear track behind. Steve Bast and Scott Autrey were involved in their own duel for second, with Steve managing to hold off Scott in his second appearance in Bakersfield. Sumner McKnight wasn't running at the finish as he was making a close track inspection down in the first turn. (Results on page 28) • .aJa Wins again! 1/2 MILl: DIRT .....CK. TaE MOST SPEer.COL. .
