The CMC's overall point leader handled everything in a calm manner. Marty Tripes completely wrecked the 500 Expert class, winning all three of his motos. Tripes motored so far out in front of his CZ he appeared to be the advance guard for a Czechoslovakian invasion of some sort. Tripes got the pleasure of working his way up through the dust only once in the second moto when he carne from fifth place to lead. Brenton Rhoades held him off for a few laps but then had to settle for a second in that race and a third overall. Brian Lend! finished second. Chuck Minert made a brief appearance in the first race and finished a distan t second to Tripes and then retired for the day. ..... ,.- to Billy Urban rode the 250 class without a second gear...and without third in the final. . The Rodriguez brothers from MontebeUo had a sparkling day. Randy had three wins in the 250 Intennediate class and Roland puUed the hat track in the 500 Juniors. Both ride new CZ's. Roland led Ralph Dominguez (CZ) across the finish line three times while Maico mounted Demoine Mosier was third. Randy beat Gayland Mosier (Ossa) andJ. Buhl (Husky). Consistent winner Doug Shennan let an overall win slip through his hands with a starting line error that left his face red. Sherman ran away in the first two motos on his CZ but forgot to turn his gas on at the beginning of the third. Chuck Bower, fmishing second both times to Shennan in the first two, happily took the lead and won the third and deciding moto for an overall victory in Division two of the 250 Juniors. Using the new BSA frame containing the engine oil for overall lightness and with a large diameter backbone for rigidity. BSA has built in a new single cylinder 500cc powerplant to give their racer one of the best power-ta-weight ratios in the motorcycling business. Running on capacitor ignition, the MX is sold without battery or lights. Its standard racing equipment includes: .. New competition front forks with aluminum alloy sliders. '" Tapered roller bearing in the steering head for rigid, hairline-accurate steering. .. Eccentrically mounted rear swing arm pivot for rear chain tensioning without worry of rear wheel alignment. • A quick detach sprocket on the rear wheel for quick changing of gear ratios. '" And a competition numberplate for the first race. • 500cc single cylinder four-stroke engine giving 38 bhp at 6,200 rpm. 2"'SA Most street scramblers are the derivative of a road machine. The 1971 Gold Star 500 changes all that. This new one from BSA is the street version of the Victor 500 trail bike. Apart from the fact that it is a little heavier, has Dunlop K70 tires and larger brakes, the Gold Star 500 shares most of the features common to a BSA trail-oriented machine.
