HINTS AND TIPS By Rod Breaker MORE ON ENDURO PREPARATION While back East the Enduro that starts at midnight has been around for some time, (Mark Twain Trail, Iowa Tall Corn Derby, Mormon Trail, etc.) their popularity is just beginning on the West Coast. For many riders this means worrying about whether the lights ~i11 keep working or not; this is something they have not had to contend with before. Besides a thorough checkout before you go on the run to see that all the connections are clean and everything is in working order, you can be prepared for any problems that may crop up along the way. It is a good idea to carry some type of small flashlight just in case, I have seen riders coming into a check with their flashlight taped to the front fender and using it for a headlight. a Busqvaraa . Better still, put a headlamp bulb inside the lamp housing and a taillight bulb can be taped inside of the taillight lens, that way you can save time as you will have to remove either one to change it if it goes out and the bulb will be right there at your finger tips. ~f your headlamp uses the sealed beam type of unit, you are just out of luck for carrying a spare unless you convert your lamp to the bulb type. I f you would rather not make this conversion, your next best bet is to have. your pit crew carry a spare sealed unit along. In case something happens, you will be able to limp into the next check point or gas check using someone else's lights and change yours. 2.) While many of these night enduros use public roads, the machines must conform to the state vehicle code which states that the tail lamp must be red in cotor. In case of a good wheel ie, the lens can get shattered and maybe you will have a tail lamp, but without a lens; it can't be red so you could be liable for a citation. One thing that will help is to take scotch tape and cover the lens (of course it must be clear scotch tape) this way it will hold the lens together in case of an impact and while it might not look pretty. it can be kept in place so that you have a red tail lamp. Another system that some riders use is to paint the bulb with red fingernail polish so if they lose the lens, it will still be red (of course jf the unit gets crunched, nothing is going to help). 3.) If you machine has the wires to the dipper switch running through the handlebars, this is asking for trouble. In case you fall down and the lever turn< on the handlebar, there is a good chance of sheari ng the wires off and By Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., July 24,1971 - One of the biggest entries for Perris turned out tonight in spite of the Point Run at Elsinore and both new and old faces put on quite a show. Tim Holm had things together best as he picked up wins in both the 125cc Novice 11 and the 175 -2 OOcc class. Second and third place Dan McWhorter and Rex Hailey applied pressure in the 125cc class with each one right on his back wheel. In the second moto Rex Hailey came from no where to take the win. Gorden Bettencourt working on a handicap flag came about as close as anyone can to taking the win from Tim but the novice rider held his cool and the number one spot. Vince Graves picked up his fIrst win of the season in the AlE moto and like most of the races it was close. Walt Foster, a hard charger, never let up on Graves hoping for that one mistake that would open up a hole. Unfortunately for Walt, Vince never made one. Bud Barry racked up another win in the Novice Moto B aJ]d if he keeps on he will find himself riding with the big boys. Tom Darrah, a new face to the winner's circle, got it all together to take the win in the Novice Moto A. Harold Holladay and Jeff McDevitt were a close second and third and all of them were running almost identical times. Rick Draudt fmally figured out his Bultaco and had some fine duels with Dusty Mudd to take the 250cc Novice ill. Draudt just traded a baby Greenstreak for the bigger Bul and his flfst few outings hadn't been too successful. Maybe Mudd inspired him to better things. Taking a liking to Perris was Mike Albright as he picked up the gold in the 250cc Novice 11 go while David Boydstun had the most poin Is in the 250cc Novice 1. But it went right down to the wire with three evenly matched riders. Dave Fletcher was second and Steve Waller third. Rohert Zepeda was the top man in the 125cc Novice II class. Jim Ashley was arguing the point but lost when he tangled in the tires and almost ended up in the spectators laps. Jim Miller took the first 125cc Novice class over David Rees and Dave Diableo. Steve Bales is getting close to a Perris Amateur raing as he picked up another win in the 100cc Novice 11 class. It was a clean sweep for Kawasaki riders with Donald Ray and Dave Racine second and third. Allen Hauser, another new face gave Dan McWhorter his second, second place finish in the 100cc Novice 1. Dottie Forst and David Jones scored wins in the Mini-Bike goes with John Guthrie and Jim Freyder taking the wins for the Mini-Cycles. For all those riders who think the return strip into the pits is a racetrack, come sit with the spectators and eat all of the dust you raise. If you can't get it on out on the track don't do it in the pits, it doesn't prove a thing! (Results on page 32) causing a direct short with the hot wire to the switch. These wires should be taken out of the handlebars and a small notch filed in the edge of the switch bracket so the loom can fit through it. Then run the wires down the outside of the handlebar as shown here, but they should be taped to the bar to avoid getting. caught in the underbrush and tearing off. All the wires that travel out in the open should be checked to see that they are close to the frame so they will not get caught and ripped off. MX CHAMPIONS The New Mexico Motocross Club held its championship race oh the Fourth of July at Bearcat Racetrack near Albuquerque. Riders from seven different states participated.
