• AII-Jrs. at Rough Rider By Chuck Ferguson ROUGH RIDER CYCLE PARK, SIMI VALLEY, CAL., Aug. I, 1971 - As with all "All-Junior Days" which are designed to give the Beginner and Novice a crack at the brass for a change, there were a few Intermediates and Seniors who attempted to swoop in and out with some quick-easy brass. Fortunately, several of these cherry-pickers were spotted by some alert officials and spectators and these critters were turned from beneath their rocks; some grudgingly left while others had the veracity to race again only to receive the "you blew it" flag and then raised all kinds of excuseful hell! The management stood firm and the decisions held and with that out of the way let's mention a few of the day's highligh ts. 100 Beginner Arville Lorelta took both his mo tos and 100 Novice was a Twin.Victory for a Tri-Am favorite Larry Hentschel. In line with' double sweeps were Bob Rogers (125 Beginner) and little Dave Kolbe (125 Novice). A tough 2 seconds was a good first overall for 250 Beginner Randy Brenneise with Scott Hartley bagging the 250 Novice class. Not to be outdone was Open Beginner Rod Kersha.y with his two firsts and rehearsing for the Tri-Am was crafty Scott Pelky who carted away Open Novice brass. Today's event caps the racing program at Rough Rider until the Tri-Am August 22 ....The l;1ormal week day riding is temporarily halted due to extensive preparation but officials did say the course will be open for public .aJa use on weekends and the Tri·Am practice August 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.rn. .... '" o ~ Wins again! PETTY LEADS KACY TEAM Motocross great Preston Petty will be captain of the Ventura County's KACY radio station team for the special match race at Rough Rider Park during the _ Tri·Am August 22. John Rice will be co-captain to Billy" CleII!.ents, Steve Scott, Kenny Zahrt, Tom Rapp, Doug Grant, and others. Suspension List Grows Bill Boyce, Director of Professional Racing for the AMA, has announced the suspension of five more licensed professional riders for falsification of medical forms. The five falsified medical questionnaires resulted from a continuing routine examination of the AMA licensing files. The riders suspended include Novice Brian and Steven Dalgarno of Baltimore, Md.; Novice Duane R. Van Leeuwen of Hollywood, Calif.; Expert Neil Keen of St. Louis, Mo.; and Expert David Aldana of San ta Ana, Calif. The Dalgamo brothers are hereby suspended for 15 days effective July 27. Van Leeuwen, Keen- and Aldana are suspended 15 days effective July 26. The 15 days suspensions follow the precedent established for first offenses of this viola tion. ~ w Z W ..J U >- U Hilltopper's M.C. It is customary for the F.I.M. affiliate in the host country (in this case, England's A.C.V.) to set the number of entrants that the other country will be able to send to the con test. This year we are allowed 30. To make its selection, the A.M.A. intended to hold six qualifying rounds but they got started too late to make it happen. Instead there were two rounds, one of which was not an A.M.A. event at all, the Berkshire Trials. The other event was the recently held Trask Mountain Trials. Virtually the same riders did well in both events so it's quite probable that the best riders have been properly sorted out. Coincident with the problem of selecting the best riders is the selection of the brand of bike they are to ride. Both 1iusky and Penton have valid claims to the honor, so one obvious solution is to let each manufacturer supply half the bikes for the trophy DESERT (Continued from paie 6) Did you think that a bit much? Well right out there in sunny Barstow some luckless rider caught his 250 CZ on fire. And would you believe, some helpful roul picked up a five gallon can and poured gasoline allover the smoldering bike? That's just what happened. It looked like a very expensive smokebomb. Opinion about the quality of this week's race varied quite a bit. I liked it very much and thought it was just about the right degree of difficulty, all things considered. (Mostly, the beat. It was very, very hot). Marking, however, seemed to me to be something less than adequate in a few spots. Winner Rich Thorwaldson didn't like the course at all. "All silt and rocks," he said. But he added that he didn't think the club was to blame. It was just the nature of the terrain. He did hold the club responsible for the marking which he really thought was miserable.. He got lost three times, not counting the trouble he had finding his way out of the pits. Rescue 3 was on hand, trying out their new vehicle, and they had a fairly light day, about 7 reportable injuries. lt's really nice to know that Rescue 3 is working an event that you're riding, especially when it's 110 in the shade (and there isn't any) and your scooter decides to poin t its drain plug at th e sun. (Results on page 32) team. This was unacceptable to Hnsqvarna, so a deal was made to the effcct that Penton will supply the Trophy Team bikes and Husky will supply the Vase "A" Team bikes. As kind of a sweetener to the deal, John Penton has agreed to pick up the entire tab for the Trophy Team. A complete listing of the teams follows this article but here are a few interesting facts. On the Trophy team, besides the expected Pentons and Dick Burleson one finds Lars Larson and Gene Cannady. Lars generally rides a Husky and Gene is sponsored by DKW. On the Vase "A" team this year will be CAlifornia's Jackalope, IN. Roberts. Not much sand on the Isle of Man. Along with the two Vase teams and the Trophy team, we are allowed four Manufacturer's teams. Which manufacturers will be' represented depends mostly on which one produce suitable bikes in time for the event. Teams have been set up to represent OSSA, Dalesman-Puch, ¥Z, and Jawa-CZ. Theoretically CZ is to mount its team on prototype 350cc six-speeds. To complete the AMA committment, most of its brass, including Mike Vancil, Ed Youngblood and Russ March, will attend this year's trials. TROPHY TEAM Jack Penton Tom Penton . Jeff Penton O. O.
