By Mike Capalite COSTA MESA, CAL., July 23, 1971 Joe Fitzpatrick took his move out of the Second Division seriously Friday night at the Orange County Fairgrounds Speedway track and proceeded to go out and win the Handicap Main after leading it from the start. Jim was able to best the competition in his heat, the Semi, and carried it right on to the Main. Finishing in second spot was Steve Gresham, another move up from the Second Division who was right on Jim for that lead position but couldn't ~eem to get the drive needed coming out of the comers. Steve Bast who had to battle with Mike Konle for the third spot as they tried to get through the traffic, found that when they were clear, there wasn't eno.ugh laps left to do any more. Quade had finished second to Waterson in the h'eat and was determined that it wouldn't happen in the main as Guy had to settle for a second with Paul Henderson and Jim Ashworth grabbing third and fourth after a spectacular crash by Scott Sivadge and John Flanders. Coming into the first Division m Main as an alternate, Dan Willits showed the rest of the boys the way around as he took the checkered flag, with Bruce Baron coming out on top in the second Division III Main. This one had the spectacular crash of the night as Cary Cotterman lost control coming out of the front comer and after zigging and zagging a little, cut across the track and center-punched Warren Roberts. They both went down in one big pile right at the starting line, but luckily neither were hurt bad. ' With the help of a beautiful hole shot off the line, Mike Konle grabbed the lead over Jim Gresham in the Feature Match Race and it was all ,over as Jim couldn't fmd the combination to ctach up and Konle took the checkered flag goingaway. The Scratch Main Event proved Rick Woods' ability as a tactician as well as a rider as the drawing for positions left Woods' on the ou tside and biggest threat for the win, Sonny Nutter, on the pole position. As both riders had accomplished the feat of winning both they. heats and their semis, the stands were charged with excitement. Off the line, it was Nutter and Konle into the comer fIrSt with Konle having about a bike's length, but as they went into the comer, they both drifted wide on full chat. Rick had gone into the comer wide and squared it off and as Nutter and Konle drifted out, he came out of the comer like a shot from a cannon and took the lead. The stands went wild! Nutter was able to come back and get on his rear wheel for the remainder of the rac, but there was no passing Rick as he took the win with Nutter in second. Back in the third spot, it was Konle and Cullum swapping it around with the battle finally going to Konle. The racing is getting better and better , on Friday nights so if you haven't made it out this year, make it a point to. (Results on page 28)
