Grant also announced that membership application forms are available from Association offices, 11 th and L Building, Room 803, Sacramento, Calif. Refit NfJ Excuse IInYl1lfJre The Sportsman Racing Association is beginning a .group of Hare Scrambles called the "Early Bird Scrambles" at Adelanto, Calif., on Aug. I. SRA has been hosting Beginner and Novice class semi-monthly European racers in Scrambles since last winter, but reports that summer heat makes it too uncomfortable for all day races, have inititated new times. The Early-Bird will start at 8 a.m. sharp for Novices and 8: 10 for all beginners. Racers will run two loops of approximately 22 miles each. The entire course is designed for novice and beginning racers with no impossible hills, gargantuan rock piles, etc. and should allow all racers, their pit-crews, and their families to be home by noon. SRA always picks up downed riders and their bikes as part of the regular daily routine. S RA officials are continuing their practice of giving trophies to 20% of the starters and for this race, are ltiving HELPFUL HELMET HINTS The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends precautionary steps which safety helmet users and new purchasers should exercise: (a) A helmet user should be aware of what material his helmet is made. Currently helmets are almost exclusively manufactured from fiberglass or polycarbonate materials. Fiberglass helmets most often are painted on the outside, while polycarbonate helmet material is either transparent or has the color impregnated into the material. Those made of transparent rriaterial are usually merchandised with an inside paint or coating. Polycarbonate helmets usually are identified by a manufacturer's label on the chm-strap. Polycarbonate helmets should not be painted or decorated by the user except with paints that can be certified by the manufacturer as compatible with the helmet material. If the user cannot otherwise iden tify this material when used in a particular helmet, the information -should be available from a retailer who deals in safety helmets. (b) S01vents and cleaning materials, unless certified by the helmet manufacturer as compatible, should not be used on any helmet type. Destructive charnical reaction is caused by a number of such cleaning agents, and in particular can occur with the polycarbonate types. (c) Pertaining to safety helmets of all makes; residents of States which publish a listing of approved helmets should purchase only those which are on the approved listing. Lacking such listings, purchasers will obtain an extra measure of safety by purchasing those helmets which carry a label-certification that the product has met the Z90.1-1966 Standard. This is a self-imposed standard set by the industry's American National Standards Institute. (d) If cracks or stress lines appear on the helmet, replace it immediately. starter pins, instead of fmishing pins. Classes are 100, 125, 175, 250, and Open, in both the beginner and the Novice categories. Also, within each of the above classes, riders under 16 years old, and riders over 35 years old will be scored in their age groups for trophies. This makes it an ideal place for youngsters and not-so-youngsters to make their debut in desert racing. Contact the SRA, 213/370-8234 or 714/735-4641 for more info.
