Ahola Cleans Up 'Sudsy' Event
By Dick Sjoboen
GRAHAM, WASH., July 15, 1971 Despite the appearance of several
nationally ranked riders, the local shoes
took the major portion of the $3000
purse for Pro TT-ers, sponsored by the
Mr. Sudsy car wash people. It was a
huge success both for the field of riders
and the near capacity crowd.
Emil Ahola (Tri) overtook national
No. 54, Dave Hansen (Tri), on the fifth
lap and held the lead for the remaining
20 laps, collecting $400 in lap money
alone. Hansen rode righ t on Mola's tail
but could not fmd room to make a
move on the local favorite. Ahola also
won the Trophy Dash, holding the lead
all the way.
Competition in the Junior Main was
very fierce. Kenny Roberts, one of the
most prominent Junior riders in the
nation, took the lead from Tom
Watterson (Yam) in the fourth lap, but
spilled on the back turn. Randy Skiver
(Tri) charged into the lead on the sixth
lap and collected lap money for the
remaining laps. Randy was fast qualifier
for the night. Previously, in the dash,
Roberts (Yam) led all the way.
As usual, Steve Baker (Yam) took all
honors in the Novice division. As a
matter of fact, Steve and his Yamaha
led all the way in every event in which
they competed. A "mis-understanding"
at the start of the dash resulted in a
rerun, but with the same results. Steve
has been clocked at less than 19 seconds
during practice and heats; it will be
interesting to see what happens next
season when he mounts a large machine!

John Gennai's winning streak has reached six at Vallejo's TT Scrambles.
Gennai Builds Win Streak
By James Brammer
VALLEJO, CAL., July 16,1971 - John
Gennai continued his uninterrupted
winning streak in the 250cc Expert class
at the weekly TT Scrambles at the
Vallejo Speedway making it six in a
row. Only four other riders have won
the 250cc class at Vallejo this year and
none of the four have a second win.
Fresh from a professional short track
win on Tu~day night at Santa Rosa, Pat
McCaul was no match for Gennai on the
TT track at Vallejo. He finished a
distant second while Terry Gough from
Menlo Park, Calif., riding his first race in
five years, finished third.
Gennai did not have a ride for any
other class leaving the 650cc final for
Ken Helling to win.
In the 500cc Junior final, Kent
Johnson took the lead from Ron Kesler
in the wide sweeping comer on the
south end and went on to win.
While Jean McFarland led start to
finish in a 500cc-650cc Novice final,
Billy Hadesty from the Fremont M.C.
on a Maico and Ray Turner on a BSA
battled for second Turner took the
second spoL
Joe Heckmann won the 250ccJunior
lead from Roy Taboada on the last lap
in the final.
The first serious crash in several
weeks occurred in the starting lap of a
combined 125cc Expert and 200cc
Junior class race. Three bikes went
down - two very hard. The track point
leader, Larry Drew hit a fallen bike and
catapulted into the air landing some 50
feet away. Drew and another rider were
carried off the track in an ambulance
but both riders declined a trip to the
hospital. Drew did not ride any other
races he had entered. When the race was
restarted, Steve Fredrickson won with
Danna Perrie taking his second place by
passing John Hearne.
Consistent winner in the 175cc
Novice class Mike Kalamaras couldn't
get through the traffic in the 175cc
Novice Final. He won his heat, but was
turned back by Bill Rider and Joe Sickle
in a competitive final.
The greatest entry is in the 100cc
Novice class taking two finals. The
young age of the racers makes it
interesting with the well prepared
equipment backed-up by Dad with Mom
having something to do with the
clothing selection for safety and looks.
Thankfully, there is not a lot of action
in this class and the riders seldom fall.
The wirmers are deligh ted with their
trophies won over multitudes of riders
entered
The l00cc "A" final winner, Karl
Cleeton wan ted to be sure the results
show him on a Bultaco. Maybe I have
been branding him wrong. The 100cc B
fmal went to Mighty Mouse, John
Prince, on a Kawasaki
