SCOTT HOFFEESCOFFS DUNES SHOES Scott Hoffee's chest protector subtley suggests his identity. By John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., July 8, 1971 John DeSoto did everything but ride upside down during today's third round of the Indian Dunes' Can-Am Series, but it was Bultaco-riding Scott Hoffee who carted off the heavy gold at the conclusion of the program. After turning back a strong field of 125 Seniors and beating John Rice by a mere two points for the day's overall, young Hoffee got serious with an ever larger and healthier field of 250 Seniors. Dave Rodgers, who had finished ahead of Hoffee in the ftrst 250 moto, fell from his cycle during the running of the second go·round and had to be taken to the hospital with a possible broken shoulder. From there to the final wire, the biggest problem which confronted Hoffee was the problem of defeating Ron DeSoto, Tim Hart, Jim Wilson, Bill Clements, Bryar Holcomh, Steve Thompson, and, of course, Tom Rapp. Hoffee was able to grab the second moto win, but the third and final round was a real dirt-kicker. Tim Hart bounced his Maico directly down track-center, taking a lead which he didn't relinquish until the final flag. Meanwhile, from somewhere near the rear of the entire pack, Hoffee was attempting to get things sorted Qut. Finally, on the last lap, Hoffee shoved his Bultaco into third position. That was all that the Torrance rider needed for his day's overall victory over Ron DeSoto (CZ) and Jim Wilson, who was also CZ mounted. A Suzuki rider named John DeSoto ran around the track all day long, while chucking dry grass, bushes, rock, sand some things which we can't even mention just now, at the exact same specators who were wondering who was creating all the ruckus. Late reports from the Old Reservation say that WaltJames, general manager at the Dunes, has had to retain a special crew 0 f gardeners and sod-technicians just to replace the landscape that DeSoto displaces every weekend. DeSoto, the solo berm·demolition crew, defeated Billy Clements (Hus) and Bob Hershey (CZ) for the day's Open Senior crown. Kenny Cook, who was this week's winner of the new California helmet, turned back the Bakersfield rider, Phil Taylor (Mai) and Fred Phillips (Hus) in his victory lane ride on the super-fast Montesa in the 250 Junior shindig. Mike Todd whipped Tom Simpson and Chris Alberts during the Open Junior slugfest. Joe Rose (CZ) and Tom Hoyle (Hod) were the big winners over the Old Timers clan while Joe Flores, Jr. (Ric) and Larry Kreie (Ric) were the victors over the 100 invasion. Jim Hale (Bul) and John Fenton, Jr. (Pen) snatched their respective division wins from the 125 Juniors. Racing will resume at Indian Dunes Park this Saturday with the running of an All-Junior program for cash. Sunday will see the first round of the fabulous Tri-Am Motocross series for an eventual payoff of $15,000 in money and prizes. (Results on page 24) III N . 1 .... Mumford (Tri) blasted off the line at the restart of the 15.1ap Main and had first going into the tum with Lloyd Houchins (BSA), fastest qualifier at 23.33, running second. The race had been red-flagged earlier when Jody NIcholas (Nor), Les Costanza (BSA) and Paul Censeprie (Nor) crashed in tum two. All were OK and made it to the restart. For two laps Mumford led with Houchins tailgating and on lap three, Lloyd got by and began to stretch a lead. Mumford continued in second with Dave Smith (Tri) pushing hard while holding third. Then, two-thirds through, Smith began to lose ground while Ron Moore S Ill. fth (Tri) , who had been running fourth all along, began to hassle for third. Coming out of .turn. four on lap 1 O~ Moore caught h~ drive and passed Struth, who went shdmg out and down. He restarted but was a lap behind and out of the runnIng. A~. the while, Houchins was contlnumg to open ground with Mumford second, Moore third and Nicholas fourth. Suddenly, Lloyd pulled off the track and Mumford sped into the lead, only two laps from the end. The problem: a broken primary chain. Bob Sanders (Yam) took the win; Hank Scott was second. Although Smith's win streak was stopped tonight he still picked up the gold in the 250cc Sr. S.T. and 125cc and 250cc IT events. In the 250cc Sr. IT, Smith came up with some new competition in the form of A.] .S. rider Morris Malone who, as of tonight, will ride Expert at A.C.A. events. Morris did quite well tonight with a second behind Smith in the 250cc Sr. IT and a first in the 500cc Sr. IT. In the Junior divislon Dennis Briggs (Kaw) was the 125cc Jr. IT winner, a not so easy feat at EI Toro Speedway as the 125cc IT is the largest class with en tries running near 50 tonight. Robert Crecelius (Kaw) was second with 3rd goinj1; to Davey Carlson (Yam). This was David Boydstun (Mai) ran away with the 250cc Jr. IT and won a new Premier helmet as well as a trophy for his effons. As he had done at Ascot the night before, Scott Brelsford (Yam) missed a shift at the start of the Novice Main and tailed the leaders going into tum one after the start. He adjusted quickly, however, and was running second to Steve ichols (Yam) by the end of the second lap and passed him out of turn four on the next. The two continued to battle for the lead as they pulled away from the rest of the challengers and on the sixth lap, Nichols went wide out of turn one and slid out, leaving an open track for Brelsford to scoot home for the win. Gary Caldwell (Bul) held off John Sperry (Suz) for second and Tom Horton (Bul) picked his way from a second row start to take fourth.
