"You just can't make a mistake against these riders on this oval," said Smith after his victories. "Make one mistake, no matter how small, and you'll find yourself doing the chasing instead. " Stan Sweany (Bul) and the return of John Sperry (BuI) formed Smith's stiffest competition of the nigh t. In the 250 TT Main, Smith had to come from behind to take the lead from Sweany early in the race. Refusing to give up the chase, Sweany continued to pressure while he himself was being chased by Sperry for second spot. At the checkered it was Smith leading over Sweany, Sperry, Jamey Blunt (Mon) and Rick Isbell (Ossa). Action in the 250 F.T. feature saw Smjth take the measure over Sperry (Bul), Blunt (Oss), Jim Table (Yam) and Dale Hopkins (Bul). Despite a two-year absence fr'om the Trojan battles, Sperry, still proved a solid contender against a formidable field of riders and looked like a future winner, especially the way he handled his Bultaco over the jump as he landed almost at the base of the hill. Bob Sanders, on his usual wirinjng spree, accounted for three main event wins taking the top money spot in the 100 TT, 100 and 125 F.T. Main Events. Sanders' key to tonight's victorjes was very simple, he just reads starter Bob Schoeman's moves before the starting flag is waved. Still in all, Sanders had his hands full of Mark Revels and his Kawasaki in both 100cc events as Revels forced Sanders to ride a flawless race to the checkered. If Revels continues to breathe down Sanders neck the way he did tonight, you can look for this rider to give Sanders a bad time the rest of this season. To prove his point, Revels showed Sanders the tail end of his exhaust all the way to the finish line in the 125 TT Main Event. An 86-rider· field forced track president, Rene Armenta, tonincrease his even ts from 25 to 33 and at th e same time giving the fans more racing for their dollar. In semi-main event action, Tom Dory (Hon) was the big winner in the 100 TT event unishing ahead of Roy Widener (Kaw), and Mike Lund (Hon). In placing second, Widener was actually the winner over theJunior class as both Seniors and Juniors saw action in the same event. Tom Heard outlasted Art Carter and Stanford for the win in the 250 TT _ semi, while Sperry came on strong to win over Heard and Hopkins in the 250 F.T. semi. Division 11 Speedway racing continues this Saturday night on Trojan's "new look" racing surface. To accommodate the high speed bikes, the high banks on the fifth-mile oval have been greatly reduced providing a much suitable track for speedway action. (Results on page 28) '0 ~ , ~ .
