The third and final heat was unbelievable as it hosted half of the '70 Main Event lineup with names such as La~will, Brelsford, Rockwood, Rice, Aldana, Sehl, Odorn, Ahola. Aldana wen t on to win with Rice in second. Along the way Dave Sehl crashed on one lap with Ed Hermann crashing the next lap. Mark Brelsford did not come out for the semi after gaining eighth and last transfer in the heat race. He lost all feeling in the hand that was hurt in the Seattle road race the week before. Castro went on to win with Dave Hansen second, Dorsc". third and former Northwest kingpin Ahola in fourth and last transfer. Houston, Laconia, have been playing national finishes this Sonny Burres had to battle off the efforts of Dave Aldana in the first half. Aldana, like last year, went down in a spectacular crash. Burres won and picked UP. along with his share of the purse, a $100 check from Cycle News for riding with a stickie. in the winner's circle. Williams, who finished sixth last year, held on with Jim taking fourth, Mann fifth, Mulder sixth, Dorsch seventh and National champ Gene Romero, eighth. The last lap saw Hateley make an unbelievable drive for tilt win. He closed three bike lengths while Burres and Hateley were side-by-side coming out of the final turn. But John was on the outside and this is the all-important thing at Castle Rock, Burres was in front at the finish line by from three to six inches. No more, no less. The crowd went crazy! The Northwest finally had a winner. Burres became the first rider from the Northwest to win a National since who can remember? It was a Triumph sweep for the first time in three years. Thousands jammed the winner's circle area, The land of IT specialists had fmally produced a major winner. To add insult to injury and make the night complete, Triumph mounted Randy Scott, also from the Portland area, won the Junior ten-lap final. Don Lipp from Tacoma was second and California's Gary Scott was third. Now the northwest had scored the total sweep. Wait until next year, mighry Californians, you haven't seen anything yet! Loyal Penn was the fastest Junior qualifier, won his heat race but then dropped out of the final, running third, with a broken engine. Randy Scott was second fastest with Gary Scott in third, this time aboard an ancient Kawasaki 650. It took three hours to clear the traffic and happy fans from the track after the event, 100 degree daytime weather turned to a perfect nigh t for racing. The spills and injuries marred the event but otherwise it was another action-filled night of racing in the wee hamlet that time passes by for all but one night each year.
