Nutter, Woods Top Crash-Filled Program By Mike Capalite Photo by Dennis Greene COSTA MESA, CAL., july 9, 1971 With no less than 35 riders crashing throughout the night's program the Friday nigh t speedway races at the Orange County Fairgrounds was indeed an oval of excitement. Even the Handicap Main had its share of the spills as three of the riders wen t down in the last lap. Sitting on the O-yard line, Nick Nicolaides took an early lead with Don Cullum, jim Nicholson and Mike Konle right behind him. Back on the 60-yard line, it was Sonny Nutter and Rick Woods with Sonny getting a beautiful shot o.ut of the hole to jump Woods off the line. As the race progressed, Konle moved up past Nicholson and Woods was pushing a little too hard to get Nutter as he came out of the corner and the machine spun around and he almost lost it. But, to the deligh t of the fans, he just let it spin around 360 degrees and straightened it out and kept right on going. Meanwhile, Nutter was 'hauling the mail' for the Great Bear Racing team as he moved past Nicholson and up behind Konle as the both of them took CuUum on the inside. There was no stopping Nuller as he slipped under Konle into second and then with only one lap to go, moved in to the lead. As they headed into the last lap, Nicolaides went down and then Nicholson and CuUum went into the fence pretty hard. While this did not effect Nutter and Konle's position, it moved Woods up for a third place finish. The Scratch Main was Rick's revenge as he drew the pole position and charged off the line to take the lead and held it aU the way, but the real action was for second place as first it was Steve Bast and Sonny Nutter fighting for it and then it was Nutter and Larry Shaw. Sonny and Larry had the crowd on their feet as they swapped the number two spot back and forth for two laps with Shaw finaUy coming out with the second spot and Nutter having to settle for third. Smith, M alone Take ACA By Rich Hoffman EL TORO, CAL., july 7, 1971 - Scott Smith (Yam) and Morris Malone (AjS) headed the list of winners tonight at the ACA's regular Wednesday night TT and ST races at EI Taro Speedway. In the Senior division Scott Smith went undefeated tonight winning both TT and ST events in both the 125 and 250 divisions. Scott's first win of the evening came in the 125 Senior TT, where Smith, Ron Taylor (Suz), and Bob Sanders (Yam) provided the majority of the action. In the 250 Senior TT, Smith again led from start to finish. Montesa rider Chris Smith finished second while Mike Meyers was third. MOTORCYCLE BAN JlEAUMONT, TEXAS (AP) - The city council has passed a law which forbids aU mo torcycle riding except on public roadways and officially designated motorcycle trails. Some of the best racing of the evening Was in the 250 Senior ST. Smith again took top honon while Mike Meyers (Yam) was second with AI Smith (Oss) riding high and outside finishing a weU deserved third. Morris Malone came from behind in both the 250 and Open TT events to become this week's only double winner in the lower division. Morris did it the hard way on the last lap of both races, beating out Marty Davis (Bul) in the 250 jr. class and john Calicchio (Yam) in the Open division. Both Davis and Calicchio went on to win in the ST race in their class. It was crash night at the EI Toro track with at least a dozen riders going down during the evening of racing. The track was slippery with dust being another problem. With both riders and spectators on the increase it seems like a little more effort should be put into the condition of the track.
