Jim Rice, hardly a roadracing specialist, kept in close contention for the
begun raining hard as Brelsford poured
on to the drag strip weU over 80 miles an
hour. He hydroplaned on a puddle and
slid off the course. A clump of dirt sent
him sprawling through the air and he
came to rest inches from the guard rail.
He was shaken but fortunately suffered
only a hand injury.
John Green, a privateer from
Carmichael, Calif., won the second
running of the new Novice·J unior
Lightweight class on a Yamaha. The
lead went first to Rudy Galindo of
Santa Fe Springs, Calif., then Jimmy
Chen. Mike Lane who started from the
back row after falling in his heat, moved
ahead and soon had several seconds on
the pack. Green slipped past Chen and
Galindo and, with eight laps to go,
found himself in the lead after Lane
broke. Chen and Galindo were wire to
each other and fought so hard that
Green's lead had aU but vanished by the
time they cr~ssed the finish line,

'lost a gas cap at the start and collided
with Scott Brelsford on the Iltst tum.
Hot half-mile Novice Scott Brelsford decided to try roadracing for the first time on Jim' Odorn's
TD·2. just to see what it was like. Surprise, surprise.
Both riders were unhurt but both
Yarnahas were destroyed by fire.
