.... en ~ w Z w ~ tJ ~ Ho I M al G,'e" I Woods Rips By Will Palmer PRESCOTT, ARIZ., June 20,1971 - A total of 135 riders braved the heat of the day to put on a spectacular show at Slaughter House Gulch Raceway. Frequent spills by top riders in wheel to wheel battles caused some upsets in the results. Jeff Coker of Flagstaff in the 250 Amateur class did some damage to his arm in a 3rd heat spill, and in spite of the injury during the 6rst lap, he fmished the race in a mad scramble with high flying Steve Simpson of Kingman, who also had met with temporary disaster. These two men put on a fantastic show wherever they race. Scon MUDS of Phoenix, Ariz., put it all together to take the class with Jeff Klinder of Phoenix second, and Lee Casteel of Prescon third. The 125 Amateur riders Woody Higgenbonon, Doug Schllader, Muns and Randy Barnes put Oil a good show, with Higgenbottom taking the checkered fmt. _Doug Hale took his IlJ'It class win of his career in spite of a 7th place first heat. Doug showed cia.. galore in the second and third heats with good starts and two heat wins going away in the 125 Novice group one. Group two winner, Don Cobb, had a good dice throughout the day with Leroy Bradsong, Kirk Hawkins and Jim Jacobs. (Results on page 24) By Sportphoto BAKERSFIELD, CAL., July 7, 1971 It took United States Champion Rick Woods just under two laps to come from the 50 yard line and take the lead in the fast and furious Handicap Main tonight. Rick went high and wide into the first tum, slipped past Larry Shaw and Mike Bast, then in tum two, he got by Don Cullum and into third place. In the second lap Rick nipped Larry Moon in the first tum and nailed the lead in the second tum by going around Sumner Mt:Knight. Once in the lead, Rick took a more usual line around this l/8th mile oval and opened up some empty track on the field with his usual fantastic slides and, extracting every last bit of traction, wheelies down most of the straights. This event put Rick one up on Sumner for the evening, as both were even going into the main. Rick won the heat with Sumner coming in second, while in the semi, the order was just the opposite. It was Stu 'Red Beard Racing Team' Morley over Larry Moon by the slimmest of margins in the Feature Match Race that -never saw these two very evenly matched racers very far apart. Mike Leming held off a large field to pull off the win in the popular mini bike feature, while little Charles Wilson, after winning the special mini-mini bike Match Race, got very up-tight when it came time to kiss his special trophy girl and flatly refused. Someday Charley may regret that choice. Right in that vital .020 to .035 inch gap. And the high voltage "zap" better be hot and right on time. every time. NGK puts the power there via a special copper core. This "Heart of Copper" dissipates heat faster than ordinary iron cores. Which means a cooler electrode and insu lator ti p. Less chance for hot spots to cause pre-ignition. Add a long, heat-keeping insulator nose for fouling protection and you've got a wide heat range plug that runs at idle or flat-out. The payoff is in performance and longer life for two and four cycle engines. For one, two, or three cylinder bikes. Lawn mowers, outboards, snowmobiles and dune buggies. NGK's are ideal in four and six cylinder sports cars; in imported and domestic compacts and sub-compacts where revs are higher, firing more frequent. And they help power-up high compression -high octane, or low compression-low octane V-8's. Whether your engine is young or old, NGK solves the generation gap. Plug in a set. NGK's don't cost more. They just do more. NGK, the long life, hi-performance plug. ~ .. " NOW AVAILABLE! ROAD & DIRT TRAIL .OTORCYCLI TRIP.ap.
