i Froschaur, Simmons Star in ABI Grand Prix ~ :;; By Steve LeHuray TUSTIN, CAL., july 11, 1971 - If ~. sheer effort and hard work alone made > winners then the AFM would have to be ~ a winner, but with an AMA National 1!1 road race at Kent, Wash., the AFM had $ a poor turnout of spectators and racers ~ for its ABM Grand Prix. w The closest racing of the day was in d the 500 to Open GP. john McGillivary, ~ making a return to road racing after a serious non-racing injury earlier this year, found that he has lost none of the fire necessary to race with the likes of Norton rider jack Simmons. Bob Nelson on a high barred, muffled Kawasaki Enduro model held off several more exotic GP bikes to take first in the 200 CP class. If Dean Hummer had one more lap to run his Harley-Davidson powered side hack the persistent team of Ozzie Auer and WaIt Carnett just might have scored a win. At the start of the last go 'round Hummer's rear wheel bearing seized forcing hiro to slow down. But, luckily, Hummer had a good lead over second place Auer_ Hummer and Gulbransen had better ~ Hummer and Gulbransen From the flag's fall these two riders scratched and slid around OCIR's 10 turns. While passing and repassing each other the specators were starting to get pumped, but halfway through the 30 mile McGillivray's BSA 3 went sour and he dropped from contention. Simmon's easily cruised on for his second checkered flag of the day's races. With George Kerke~ and Bill Manley absent for the heavyweigh t production race, Simmons showed how confident he was by walking across the track to his Norton at the LeMans start. Although he was tbe last rider away he had no trouble at all being the first to finish. Dave Burchards on a new Honda 500-4 held off Alan Barbie and Mike Devlin to win the 500 class. Steve Froschaur continued his domination of the lightweight CP class by finishing 2 miies (one lap) ahead of his nearest competitor, Yamaha mounted Tom Cleghorn. San Cabriel's Rod Marui..' Ossa won the 250 GP. + watch out, though, because the Kawasaki powered team of Auer and Camett seem to be edging a little closer with every race. The 350 GP turned out to be another parade with Northern rider Alan Barbies TR 2 Yamaha ambling around in front of a few street Hondas and Yamahas, AFM roadracing resumes next month at Orange County with the Buco Crand Prix a race that is expected to attract several AMA stars plus all of the local scratchers. (Results on page 24) Jack Simmons goes around John McGillivary in turn one. 5! June 26 Indian Dunes, California Can-Am Series Moto-Cross loOce Jr. ~iy. A LARRY HENTSCHEL loDcc Jr. ~iy.
