11@ By John Blanton SAN ANGELO, TEX., June 27,1971 With $2000 in contingency money being offered by Amalie, road racers, mo tocross racers and drag racers gathered at Green Valley Raceway for a three·way racing bash. Entrants who availed themselves of Amalie's free oil change and decal were eligible for as much as $200 for a first place finish in any of the four motocross classes, three road race classes or top eliminator drag race series. Winner of the big race of the day, the Open class feature road race, was Mike Odem on a 750cc Norton, which sported a king-size Castrol sticker. Earl y leader Bob Grosse (H-D) soon dropped out, and Robert Lee (BSA) drew steadily ahead of third place Bob Thomas (H-D) to clinch second place. Mike Kidd (Yam) was twice winner in the 250cc class over his long-time rival Johnny Bryant (Yam), first in the heat, then in the feature, but the second time was the hardest. Johnny first pulled a good lead on Mike in the Final, and a deadly earnest scrap began. It all ended two laps from the end when the lead Yamaha slowed perceptibly, allowing Mike to take the second win. David Watkins, riding over steadily on his TD2, finished third in both the heat and the Final. Dave haawon the heat in the previous race meet at Green Valley in May, but mechanical failure put him out in the Final. Mike Odem was slated to ride M.1. Watkins' other TD2 in the '''Amalie 2000", as he had previously, , Montesa. Fourth, on one of the new Carabela motocross racers, was Johnny Kimbell. Winner in the 200cc class was Morris Robertson on a Penton, Top drag eliminator was Paul Jones on a Harley-Davidson, and runner-up was Bob Skirrell on a Kawasaki. Most of the favored entrants in the drag Mike Kidd but the bike turned up on race day with a broken rod. The older Watkins reports that keeping a TD2 on the track is an expensive proposition. Despite the fact that he won the 500cc heat by a very wide margin, Mike McAdam's Suzuki was hopelessly outclassed in the Open class run off (in which the 500cc and Open classes are grouped together). Phillipe Terranella (Kaw) displayed spectacular style in winning the 500cc Production event over Jet Tharp (Yam). Terry Peterson and Gary Parker, both on 400cc Suzukis, took first and second in the Open class of the motocross. Third was Anthony Jones on a Husqvarna 400. Jody Faust on a CZ was the 250cc winner, and Bennie Weir (Pen) took the 125cc class over the much favored Mike Johnson on a BIG BORE 360cc to 410cc, 100cc to 133cc 125cc to 250cc to 327cc 311, gal Sherpa SoT!PurSang tanks & skid plates Blank cylinder sleeves, all sizes (do your own porting).
