Clement Sweeps 250s at Sprockets MX By Carl Witt Photo by Karen Hartman WICHITA, KAN.,June 27,1971 - On a ~. typical Kansas summer day, hot, windy, > and dusty, the Sprockets Club of ~ Wichita held their regular motocross races. State riders were well represented ~ and a new face at the track was seen, a w young lad well known in the California Z W area, Steve Nutter from Redondo ...J Beach. U >No moisture had faUen to dampen U the dust at the track, and even wetting the track down between races did little • Garv Witt Drouhard from Wichita on a DKW, who had two firsts and a ftfth, giving him 895 points. Mike Niedens on a Penton took second with a first, second, and fourth totalling 869. In the Sr. class, Gary Clement, Wichita, Yamaha, took first with a solid 1200 points, Mike LeVaUey (DKW) came in second with 900 poin ts. The 250cc class was the race of the day. There were 25 bikes in all, a dozen of them Jr. ride.... The heat had dried things out so badly that riders couldn't get footing or traction, so aU ride... won their points the hard way. This was a really rough race for the Senior riders, due to so many inexperienced racers slowing things down. Jim Harvey, Wichita, Bultaco, got 1200 points for first place in the Jr. class with second going to Pete Kaufman (CZ). Pete has an awful lot of bad luck, but maybe now with the new CZ, he can start showing his stuff. In the 250cc Sr. class, there was a battle between Gary Witt, Wichita, Steve Nutter, the California boy, and Loy Burnett, another local. Nutter was first off the line twice, but by the third to improve the hard dry surface. Spills were commonplace, but no serious injuries, just a lot of scrapes and bruises. In all classes, the J unio... and Seniors were run together but scored separately. There were 23 Junior riders and three Senior riders who took part in the 125cc class. First place went to Greg 200 PONY EXPRESS ANNOUNCED CMC Utah, in conjunction with the Utah State Travel Council, will host a 2-man relay August 28 and 29. The second heat of this class was a battle from start to finish. Approximately 200 yds. from the starting line is a bowl which can be taken high or low, and this spot was where the trouble began. Nutter, Witt, and Burnett tangled, with Witt in the middle. Burnett recovered immediately, then Nutter. By the time Witt's engine cleaned out he was in last place. By the 7th lap, Witt had moved to second place where he finished in this moto. Burnett, with some hard riding came in first, and Nutter was third. Standings. for the day were Witt, 1100, fi...t on a Yamaha; Burnett (Kaw) second with 1000 points; and Nutter '(Bul), first time on this track, third with 675.
