--------- MARKEL ROLLS TO 28th NAIi0NAL .WIN .... Ol rD > :; By Ken Dunlap Cycle News East ~ COLUMBUS, 0., June 27, 1971 - Bart w Markel answered everyone's doubts as Z to whether he'd ever beat J oe Leonard's ~ record of 27 National victories, a record U he tied last year with a win at the Santa Fe Half-Mile National. Markel answered the question today by running away from the other 11 main event fmalists to win his first National of the year and the fourth in a row for Harley-Davidson. A total of 15,000 fans turned out for the annual Charity Newsies and everyone seemed to think that it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Markel took the lead early and going into turn one of the second lap, Bart pulled off one of his tricks that only he could do. Blasting into the turn, he didn't shut off; but, instead, dropped his macnine on its side and let his handlebars do the turning for !lim as they dug into the track. He quickly jumped back up and squared off the corner and shot into a 30 yard lead. From then on, ne never really nad to race as he gradually built up to a nalf-a-lap lead at the end. "Wh y is winning so easy and losing so hard?" Markel said afterwards. And in this one, Bart really made it look easy. Don Castro (Tri) , after holding the lead for the initial lap, dropped to second and finished in that position with John Hateley (Tri) taking third. Markel also won his heat race but it was week's winner Dave SebJ (H-D) who started the day by appearing to be the odds-on favorite as he carded the fastest qualifying time of 26.17 and then rolled off a first heat win. But when the Main came, Sehl blew his transmission and had to settle for last. "That was a $2500 transmission I blew," he said later in reference to the winner's snare of the purse. Sehl wasn't the only one to experience transmission problems as Cal Rayborn (H-D) also had to drop out a short while later to finish 11 tho Keith Mashburn (Yam), who had gone down in turn one of the first lap, remounted' and continued to race but dropped back two laps. He was still able to collect 10th place points just behind Dave Aldana's ailing machine. Triumph mounted Ronnie Rail made his third half-mile Main and collected fourth to edge him nearer to the Top Ten in the points race. T!lird in that race is Jim Rice (BSA), who closed up a considerable amount of ground on the two leaders, Dick Mann (BSA) and Gene Romero (Tri) , who didn't make the program. Mann almost did as he had a second row start in the Semi, but he jumped the starter and was penalized and that cu t his chances considerably. Teddy Newton (Tri) and Larry Palmgren (Tri) fmished 6th and 8 th respectively and picked up their frrst points of the season. Royal Sherbet (BSA) was the other finisher taking 7th. Gary Scott (Tri) led the Juniors after a fierce battle with Kenny Roberts (Yam) and Frenchy LeBlanc (BSA) on the back straigbL Roberts was the fastest Junior qualifier and led for the fIrSt couole laps, but lost it to Gary who went on to win. The Main Events were switched due to threatening thunderstorms in the area, but it never snowed before the en tire program was fUn. The circuit now swings to the West Coast and San Jose, Calif. Jim Rice has won that event several times in the past and is the defending champion there. In addition, some of that area's hotshoes will join the circuit including notable, Terry Dorsch, who has been burning up the Corona, Calif. track with sub-23 second laps.
