Well, it's not and is our face red for letting it get by us. Anyway, make note th-at the machine is owned and operated by Dave Evans. Sorry Dave - both of you. I.BUIOS (Collti'lued from page 23) When you've finished preparing the bike, take a close look at the bod. Is it, saggy or overweight? Is the carburetion poor from too many cigarettes cutting down the air supply? Are you trying to run on a poor grade of fuel like potatoes and martinis? If you come into the lunch break and have to force yourself to get back on the bike after a half hour rest, your body needs attention and you better not neglect it. ]f your bike wears out, you can junk il and gel a new one, but new bodics arc hard to come by. Riding gear is like women. Every guy had his own ideas about the right combination of desirable attributes. The tradeoff (in riding gear) is usually protection versus heat and bulk. Most gu ys are so Id on th e advan tages of wearing helmets and boots but there's a lot of disagreement ovcr almost every other item. For what it's worth I'm a firm believer when it comes to leathers (bottoms, that is) kidney belts, belstaff jackets· in anything but the hottest "weather and goggles with glass lenses. If it looks like it's going to be a tough run with bad spills a rcal possiblity, I wear motocross knee pads, elbow pads and sometimes even shoulder pads. If you have to get around someone in a bad rock y section, that padding is worth a lot of courage. . The last item is one which I can't stress too strongly. Carry some emergency supplies. Water, matches, a knife and a candy bar are the very minimum. Water particularly might just save your life or somebody else's someday. If you get off hard and it's very hot. the difference between passing out, off the trail and out of sight, and somehow managing to get to help, might be just a swallow of water. It doesn't matter whether you're in the forest or desert either. Carry the water on you, not on the bike. I know it's hard to take, but you and the bike are not inseparable. Good preparation is at least half the battlc. Do it right and you'll enjoy enduros a great deal more than the guy who has to hike ten miles every Sunday pushing his bike. * ATTENTION * TURNERS CHAMBERS We've gone wholesale, deal direct.
