SlIall Point Run By Sandy Cooke SOMIS, CAL., June 20, 1971 - The name of the game was disappointment to the Bay Mare Cycle Assn., the spectators and the entrants. The turnout was so small that the 125 and the 250 Senior classes were comhined in the three, fifteen minute motos. In these, in spite of the displacements differences, the group stayed pretty tight. In all three motos, Larry Watkins (DKW) stayed up in the top to grab fIrst 125 Expert. Larry showed what he could really do by winning the third moto, 250's and all. Second went to Joe Veillon on a Puch. The 250 Senior was won by Keith Tennis (Mai) and second was Tony Rodgers of the SYZ Team. Terry Bilton cleaned up in the 500 Senior by taking three first. Mike Chamberlain was a real threat on his new 450 Ducati, until his front tire came off the rim in the second moto. This gave Bilton the run of the track for the rest of the day. Tom Slagle pulled through to win the 250 Novice class over Randy Berkley. The 125 Novice was won by Brett Chapman with John Steeber in second. If District 37 riders don't start supporting their clubs soon, there will be no more point runs; the clubs won't be able to afford it. (Results on oao:e 28\ Bill Cody continues to ride as if pursude but little does he know about his Bast opponent. CODY AND MOON TOP SPEEDWA Y BILLING By Mike Capalite Photos by Dennis Greene COSTA MESA, CAL., June 25,1971 Running the same program as was postponed from last week, the delay seemed to be the thing for Larry Moon and Bill Cody as they took the wins in the Handicap and Scrateb Mains. While the track was again in rough shape, the riders seem to become adapted to it as there were not as many spills as last time out. This is naturally exclusive of the Division three races which always seem to have their share of spills, but holding out to win the first one was James Dancause with motocross rider Bruce Baron taking the checkered in the second one. The Scratch Main Event couldn't have been a better line-up if the promoter had planned it himself, sitting on the line was 1969 and 1971 U.S. Champ Rick Woods,. 1970 California and U.S. Champ Steve Bast, "Wild Bill" Cody, the Valvoline Oil sponsored ace who was undefeated in match race competition this year, and Mike Bast, younger brother of Steve who has fInished in third place in two U.S. Championships in a row. Off the line it was Cody in the lead with Steve and Mike right on him, as they came out of the first corner. It couldn't be said that anyone had the lead as Mike, Bill and Rick were all side by side, and this is the way they went into the next corner. As tJ:>ey ·came out There has been a lot of controversy of late that the second and third division riders do not get enough riding time in to help them get better, so starting this weekend, they are going to hold second and third division races at the Trojan Speedway in South Gate, Calif., so it looks like we may see an improvement in our upcoming ride.rs. . The Division Two Main. was a wire to wire win for Butch Fishburn as Scott Sivadge was pushing him all the way with Steve Gresham moving up through the pack to e«change. third spot wjth Mickey Quade a couple of times until he lost it in the corner leaving Mic,key an easy third. In the Handicap races, Moon used his O-line start to his greatest advantage as he took the wins in his heat, his semi and lastly in the main event. In the main he led it from wire to wire. Jim Gresham, who finished second, was right on his tail all the way, but was unable to do anything but keep third place man Scott Autrey from moving up. NORTHWEST LARGEST SlOCK OF ACCESSORIES & CLCJTHING to the cheers of the fans. The race was called as it finished with Cody first, Steve second, Woods third and Mike fourth. (Results on page 28) in front of the main grandstands, Cody was ahead by a hall-a-wheel with Woods and Mike Bast side by side witb Steve cutting to the inside as the front three had all drifted wide. Then it happened, Cody, Woods and Mike were so close together that no one is sure just what happened. Either Mike's chain broke or Rick'"s footpeg caugh t his rear chain, but the chain snapped and caught between the New desert demonstration rides: sprocket and the frame. While this nomrally would mean that it would just slow a rider down and he would be out of the race. In this instance, these three were in full-lock slides in close quarters and it bounced Mike against the wall and then against Rick and then back to the wall where he lost it in one of the most frigh tening crashes yet as the finale was th e machine landing on top of him. Woods spun out in the corner in the next lap, and due to the immobility of Mike on the track, the race was stopped on the third lap so the aid man could examine Mike, but he just had the wind knocked out of him and seemed to be alrigh t as he limped Irom the arena Suzuki 400 MX; BSA 500 MX; AJS Stormers; Montesa Cappras SUZUKI CITY 728 So (90301) LaBrea, (213) 674-143'1 Inglewood, Calif.
