Myers, Lunde Dominate MX By Blaine Harrington LAFAYETTI;;, COLO., June 13, 1971 The scene was set for a super battle today in the 250 Expert class at Coal Creek Raceways. All the top riders, Jim Wicks (Maico), Mike Meyer (Hus) , Gordon Bryson (Hus), and Bill Osthoff (Yam) were entered. Above all, Gary Myers, who put a 250 Husky powerplant in his 400 Husky in preparation for the Viking Series, was aslo entered. A battle was brewing between Myer and his Rink-a-Dink Sports Center temmate Jim Wicks, and Mike Meyer, whose consistent fast riding is well-known in Colorado. The first heat got under way and Jim Wicks grabbed the lead immediately. Myers had a bad start. All of a sudden, from out of nowhere, Myers was closmg in. Over the next few laps Myers kept gaining until he was right on Wicks' tail. Gary went flying past Wicks through a corner, coming so close that Wicks' foot got caught in his own front wheel and he had to stop to get it loose. Immediately Mike Meyer, who was following closely, raged by. Myers and Meyer proceeded to lose sight of Wicks and that's the way the first heat ended, Myers first, with Meyer close bhmd, and Wicks a ways behmd him. In the second heat (they were running two long heats) everyone watched closely as Mike Meyer was the first over the hill. But Mike was too anxious to stay ahead of Myers and, going down in to a dtich, he fell. The entire pack, including the 125 Experts, went bombing past. Everyone thought his chances were ruined but within several laps Mike was third right behind Wicks and Myers. In overall results, Myers was first, Wicks second, and Meyer, third. In the 250 Sportsman race Scott Campbell (Hus) and Mike Spalding (Hus) traded wins, but Campbell's frrst place was faster so he took home the frrst place trophy. Don Nix (Hus) was righ t beh ind 'em, placing third both times, and getting th ird overall. In the 500 Expert class Chuck Lunde and John Meyer, both on Huskies, battled through both heats. John was winning the first heat until about halfway through when Chuck passed him. Meyer, Mike's younger brother, and Lunde have been havmg some super duels recently at Pinon and Strasburg. Mike Lee, also on a Husky, wasn't too far behind John Meyer. In the second moto Lunde won again with Mike Lee in second. John Meyer finished eighth after a fall. The final results saw it was Lunde first, Lee second, and Meyer third. , In the 500 sportsman class no one could keep up with Randy Van Dyke's Suzuki Cyclone and he won both times. 125 Expert David Hamby (Yam) won Weight Liftin~ GET IT UP WITH A'FLOATER' both his races. Stan Plattner (Yam) and Ron Lewis (Yam) exchanged second place several times bu Plattner won overall when Lewis fmished the last moto in fifth place.
