... M EAST . 8- Q. team in the race for Trade trophy were Ossa and Piasecki with 3193 points and 3065 points respectively. On Sunday the course was the same except that the riders went around it in the opposite direction, which for all practical purposes, makes it a new course. And just to make sure that no one was sloughing off, the schedule speed was raised from 24 to 26 mph. The array of riders going for the top prizes was staggering. Besides the already-mentioned Puch team, there was Dick Burleson, Mike Lewis and Jack Lehto riding for Piasecki, Dave Lathem, Don Cutler and Charlie Vincent riding for Ossa. Among the Club teams vying for a huge trophy were the Amherst Meadowlarks (Jack and Jeff Penton and Dane Penton Leimbach) and the Missouri National Competition Riders (Cary Surrdyke, Ray Biesek and Ed Schmidt). By the end of the day most of the top name riders were still on their gold medals but that wasn't enough. The top individual scores and the top team efforts were all perfect from the standpoint of enduro points lost. The decision rested on the special tests and the bonus points won or lost on the starting line (starting within 1 minute each day) and the fmish line (lights working, silencer intact). This is as it should be because it will probably be like that at the Isle of Man. ~ w Z W ..J U ~ U plagued with a balky engine. The lost minutes brought his total time to 40 and earned him a bronze. Behind Craig was Torn. Erickson, the only finisher from the local area. Tom is sponsored by the very proud owners of the Sport Center in McMinnville. This was Tom's first ride in a trials as well. The Amherst Meadowlarks swooped the Club Team Trophy and Yankee got the Trade team award. Most of the top riders agreed that the course compared very well to the Six Days courses and that the event was also quite similar. There was no agreement among the top riders about the severity of the schedule speeds. Some thought the Six Days speeds were faster, some didn't. Most thought that the Berkshire was a slightly tougher event because of th,l: rocks and the danger element, but only slightly. Several riders mentioned that this was a very safe course. It's interesting to note that riders assembled for this event from all over the country. Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Missouri, Ohio, ·Arizona, Connecticut, Arkansas, Nevada, Canada, and Massachusetts were represented. But in spite of the overwhelming support from the Expert riders, the turnout was rather meager. Only about 70 riders entered. As can be seen from the results, well over a third of the riders have in ternational (Please turn to pg. 50) There's just nothing like a nice wet muddy road with water bars for practicing jumps! This is Frank Diaz. Complete results are elsewhere butthe top individual winners were Jeff Penton, Dick Burleson, and Jack Penton, all riding the new six-speed Penton 125's. In the Open class Jack Lehto on a Husky got the top spot over John Penton. In the 350 class, Carl Berggren, a Swedish Californian, won for Husky. Carl was the only member of the Med-international team (Husky) to do well. His teamma te Lars Larson finished about fifth in class and Malcolm Smith, recent winner of the Baja 500 and third member of the team, didn't show up for the trials. In the 250 class, New Englanders Charlie Vincent and Don Cutler were at the top with their Yankee Ossas. The 125 class winners were coincidentally the overall winners we already mentioned. The 100 class had two riders especially deserving of metnion. The winner was Dane Penton Leimbach on a Pen ton, but nex twas Craig "Sammy" Young, 15, riding his frrst trials and second woods run. Craig would probably have won a silver medal his first time out, but he stopped to help his father, Dick Young, who was CHARLIE BOWER CARLSBAD June 13, 1971 1st - Overall 125cc Junior Div.
