CROWD UNDAUNTED BY PROBLEMS AT OPENER
By Dennis Greene
VENTURA, CAL., June 15, 1971 Ventura County Fairgrounds west of
L.A. has been opened by Golden State
Speedway Promoters. This new track is
located just a block off the ocean and is
SImilar to the race faciJjty at Costa
Mesa.
The opening of the track along with
the Sam Tanner Swap Meet brought
more people then were expected and
there was some delay in getting into the
stands.
The biggest percentage of the people
in the stands had, up to this time, just
read about speedway in the papers and
one or two problems would not tum
them off.
After the first race everyone knew
that the sport is all that anyone had said
_ it was.
The damp sea air made the surface
wet and because of an all day fog the
track was not in the best shape.
A 20-event program was presented
and some new names were brought back
to the winner's circle: Jim Gresham in
the Handicap Consolation, Les Chan key
in the Handicap Final and Dennis
Gildehaus in the Scratch Consolation:
All three men have been out of the
winner's circle for some time and it is
good to see the money get spread
around.
The final event for the biggest part of
the $1,000 purse is paid in the Scratch
Final four-lap event which had the Bast
brothers, Mike and Steve, along with
Larry Shaw and Bill Cody. Young Mike
got in ahead of Steve, Larry and Bill and
won.
(Results on page 48)
Dennis Gildehaus draws inside line while Steve Bast elects to tak take outside. Sandwhiched in between is Dave Gifford.
