tJ the 100 Junior class. First, he won a dice with Warren Mecsenburg for the lead and then Jim Perry moved in strong attempting to pass on the outside with the lead being practically a tie all the way. In the 250 Junior Final, Rich Dashiell and Terry Ottom's battle for the lead ended with Ottom falling in the third lap. The action the focused on Kim Seidler moving up into t~lrd place passing vi ark Lane. . Riders found a new surface m the Chris Beck Arena to contend with. To improve the arena for horse shows, sandy loam has been added for cushion. The sand lacks enough clay to hold together for a smooth surface. (Results on page 48) Final Winners Take Overall, Too in the tinal event, and the track had been modified a little to make a more safe race and the changes were to the liking of all the riders. There were no serious injuries during the last run and everything went off smoothly. The big winners were also, as it turns out, the overall of their respective classes for the series. Charlie Marshall on his trusty little Honda ran away with the race and was determined the overall winner in the 100cc Novice class. Two fast Penton riders both of whom ride for a very proud sponsor, Gene's Automotive of Loomis, Calif., ended the series with Overall wins in their respective classes. First was Rick Clements in the 125cc Novice and the 125cc Am. champ was Kevin Henry. Both won just about every race that they entered for the entire series. Mike McGowen of Mike's Marine and Cycle Sales of Placerville was the Overall winner in the 125 Ex. class, riding his self sponsored Bultaco. He was the only local rider who did well for the whole series. Taking the overall series win for the 250cc Nov. class was very fast CZ rider Scott Pepper. • Lonnie Foreman, riding a big Husky, won the 25.0cc Am. class and Bultaco rider Russ Powell won the 250cc Ex. class. Russ, being a factory sponsored Bultaco rider, showed his talents again in the Open class race with a first place. Maico seemed to be the password for the series in the Open Nov. class. The' win went to Doyle Jester, who won every race that he entered in the series with a great deal of ease. Marvin Helzer, on a 360 CZ, won the overall trophy in the Open Am. class and showed very well in each race that he competed in during the series. This series was a very big success with every rider getting his fill of riding on this very challenging motocross course. (Results on page 48) By Bruce C. Young PLACERVILLE, CAL., June 6, 1971 This weekend's events were the last to be run in a series of motocross races that determined the overall winners for each class by the Placerville M.C. Approximately 200 riders competed HENRY, PESTON' ACE fOLSOM fOES By S. J. Rooney FOLSOM, CAL., June 12, 1971 - Joe Henry on his 100cc Honda, won everything he entered at the Short Track Motorcycle races in the Dan Russel Rodeo Arena. Henry won his Expert 125 Main, and then went out to take awards for the longest Wheelie, and Best Appearing Rider and Bike. As Henry had won a main event in the professional races at Capitol Speedway the night before it has turned out to be a very successful weekend for the two wheel ace. Steve Pestoni took his Bultaco to the front in the heats and main to win the hot 200-250 Expert class. Pestoni had to outride nationally ranked Mike Corcoran and Rollen Eskew to garner his trophy. Jim Childress rode his.first Short Track event after returning from a four year tour in the Army. Childress showed the effects of the long layoff and will need a few more races to bring him up to the form that earned him an Expert rating. Silencers were required on all machines in an effort to keep the noise level to an acceptable degree as the track is located very close to a residential area. Most riders were able to comply with the ruling and the low noise level was beneficial to th e en tire program. One race ended with street legal Honda 100s running together .and the race was notable for the lack of noise. CIIfMIiI 91502, (213) 149-7295 Quintet Top Petfl/Ul1IfI TT By Dick Sorensen PETALUMA, CAL., June 5, 1971 Probably the most talked about heat race in tonigh t's Sportsman IT was what Larry Athanas did with a 1971 stock engined 250 BSA Victor, prepared by Cycle West. Larry jumped into the lead on the start and didn't get passed until his BSA ran out of RPM.s going into the 1st comer. Larry managed to run 2nd and 3rd for several Japs; the two strokes could only pull the four-stroke on top end going down the straight. Seems Larry got a little mixed up in his gears and shifted to 1st instead of 2nd and lost it, but got back on the track with two laps to go and finished 5th. Everyone was wondering ~ow the BSA would perform in the main but come to find out the officials disqualified Athanas saying he neVer came back on the track where he went off, and thereby squelching another two-stroke/four-stroke contest, but it showed possibilities, and a Jot of bench racing was done later. Danny Leet (Yam), grabbed the lead on the start of the 100/125 Junior combined race ahead of Ken Carli and Dennis Drew. But, Dale Stetler (DKW or whatever), who had a bad start, started working through the pack. On the 2nd lap he slipped past Drew (Bul) for a 3rd place and on the 4th lap he got past Carli (Bul) going over the jump for a 2nd place. Going down the straight he missed a gear shift and Carli zapped him back. Then, on the 6th lap, Leet began to have engine trouble. Ca(li and Stetler went into 1st and 2nd respectfully on the infield, Leet pulled off the track completely and Drew was moved to 3rd. But, still the battle for lst place continued. Stetler finally passed Carli again putting him in for the 1st place trophy. Stetler then got off his DKW, straddled his Bultaco and went out and got himself another trophy by winning the 175/200 Junior combined main. Phil Carando (Bul) jumped into the lead lo"-- - : : Mike Patrick's ....... . 0, YWHA of COIOIA 1101 E. &tb St. - C.rona (714) 135-l1n from the start but Stetler passed on the 2nd lap, with Ron. Kesler (~am) following. John Hearne's Bultaco came from behind and on the 7 th lap passed Kesler going over the jump. Then, he began working on second. He pulled alongside Carando on the last lap going over the jump and into the switch back, but had to drop back for the hard left into the sweeper, unable to out pull his foe to the checke.red. Ken Johnson got by Larry Birkhofer .on the 7th lap and then out powered Olen Stilwell going down the straight on the 9th lap to take home the 1st place trophy in the 250 Novice Main. In the 500 Novice Johnson won again, this time .riding an AJS. He grabbed the lead tight at the start flag and ran away from everyone for an easy win. Little Mike Vestal brought his dad's old BSA 44 I Victor (on its last leg, according to his dad) and got himself 1 2 nd. The 500 Junior/Expert had some surprising events with Larry Drew on. a Bultaco El Bandito winning, and Skip Doolittle, a Junior riding a Montesa for Land M Motors, taking 2nd. Ron Kesler (Suz) got a good start, but in the switchback after the jump got hung up in traffic and killed his engine. Doolittle went into the lead with Gary Newman and Drew following. Drew got second on the straight and then got the lead going over the jump and into the switchback. Saitone by this time had worked himself up to 3rd on his 400 Maico but just couldn't quite get by Doolittle and then fell on the slick switchback after the jump two laps later. . With all 0 f th e main even ts completed by 9:45 p.m. an Australian Pursuit race was organized for any and everyone that had trophied. When it had finally dwindled down to three riders (Dennis and Larry Drew and Jim Saitone) it appeared to the officails that it would last like that until someone ran out of gas. They waved the chec kers and Dennis got himself a trophy. (Results on page48) STO' 'fOG U,' Magic Shield Plastic & Glass Cleaner for competition riders. Handy 8 oz. plastic bottle $1.00.'
